Using a feeler gauge, measure the air gap. It should be between 0.4mm and 0.8mm (0.016" and 0.031") for the Sanden compressor and between 0.3mm and 0.6mm (0.012" and 0.024") for the Seiko compressor. If it is too large, adjust it by following the procedure below.

By the way, its most likely to be a Seiko compressor on your volvo.

I have a similar problem with my Volvo 944 - 95. The compressor clutch works for a few seconds and then turns off some seconds, turns on and turns off, and so on, producing too little cold fluid or gas in the "cold circuit". Any suggestions on what to do?

Hey Stiggan,

I think that problem is just too low on refrigerant. Have someone give it a quick charge or get a kit at Autozone.

ALSO: Does anyone know if the air gap procedure works on older seiko compressors ('94 940) ? I have what seems to be the same problem w/ my 940 wagon. I could use a write-up.

I believe it is the clutch on my AC system I am going to remove a shim or two and see.

I just went through all of the clutch posts and then went out and measured the gap on my 1998 S70 w/165K miles...gap was larger than my largest feeler guage...in excess of 9mm!

My problem is that it seems to require removal of the wheel and the inner fender liner? Is there any way to do it from on top w/o taking stuff apart? I can see how it is done...just can't get to it w/o removing wheel etc.

I do not have time or good spot to work on...any other alternatives. Maybe take it to a non-Volvo dealer AC shop with the narrative and pics?

Hi!

I have now examined the condensor by a UV lamp and it showed up to be a leakage where the tubes were coupled to the condensor. So it was a problem with too little refridgerant after all. Fortunately, the AC workshop fixed it as a warranty repair so I did not have to pay anything. I did also find out that a normal light lamp was useless but a LED lamp could be used as a UV lamp. Thank you for the reply xluke.
