The GM dealer had Volvo up until Ford bought it. When they did Ford pulled the franchise and resold it to the local Lincoln dealer. I talk with a Volvo or employee once a week at the least. GM already has a Swedish company, not sure if they would acquire another(I've always kinda grouped them together, maybe others do as well?) The Korean companies as much as I hope not, they wouldn't make the cars any worse, they would just use the Volvo technology to improve their other cars then probably resell it in 5 years. One company that I thought always needed a premier marque is Mistubishi(only big japanese company that dosen't have one), doubt they are in much of a position to make a 8B$ acquisition. They didnt seem to do any dragstic changes to the body styles either. Im sure they wont butcher Volvo if they do indeed buy it.(cough)9-7x(cough)well i'd say it's fairly likely that ford will sell vovlo in the near future. Jaguar/Landrover is almost sure to go i hear and since Aston is already gone that would leave volvo as the sole survivor in PAG. That means the only other upscale brand in their company would be lincoln, if a taxi with a leather interior is considered upscale that is. plus, they're in deep sh!t.It dosn't make sense for bmw as a buyer, they would have a difficult time differentiating volvo from their own lineup and they don't seem to be too keen on buyouts either (remember who ford bought rover group from) although they did buy rolls royce. vw makes almost no sense. there's no possible nich left int their lineup for volvo to fill, they build everything from a rabbit to a bugatti veyron to a bentley continental gt. however, that could be an exciting prospect, especially with ferdinand piech taking greater control over the company. gm already owns saab and probubly doesn't have the resources to spare anyways. hyundai unfortunately might make sense, since they seem to be taking themselves upscale anyways. they're a growing company with big aspirations, steadily rising sales, and a reputation for poor quality that they may try to use volvo to remedy. mitsubishi is in no position to make a move on volvo. nissan/renault might make sense since ghosn may be smart enoguh to recognize the profitability of the brand.considering diamlar chrysler's recent split though that may deter an automotive industry buyer. i say we all invest in it and buy it ourselves; we'll have a bake sale to raise the cash. It fits in well with the Ford image and lineup, whereas Jaguar and Land Rover really don't. The new Taurus is built on a Volvo platform, and if no one has noticed, they didn't bastardize Volvo like GM did Saab - rather, they've really allowed a lot more independence on the Volvo side and they have benefited enormously. Simplistic view, I know but I could list plenty of examples of small and large companies that followed that mindset. There have been rumors for months about this and the fact that Ford isn't actively denying it implies that they are probably looking at different options. Volvo would be the bastard stepchild economy car. Owned by Kia or Haundai on the other hand they would be the upper level trim line. Renault could go either way.I agree. the idea of a RWD volvo is appealing, but there is no way BMW would let any volvo compete with any of its own cars in terms of performance. Volvos would be made intentionally slower and given inferior handling than BMW's. Although build quality would be good you could say goodbye to high performance. Also, wouldnt a RWD volvo made with BMW parts just be a BMW? we would lose everything we like about our cars except maybe the styling. I put 265K on my Corvette, the second owner has now put another 100K on it. All on the original engine that is still purrring like a kitten. 90% of all Corvette's EVER MADE since 53' are still on the road or in a collection.Dont ever compare the smallblock and bigblock Chevy engines with any eurotrash. I can take a ZZ4 crate engine, pop in low compression pistons and cam, and pump 30+Lbs of boost into it and it WONT BREAK. And some modifications to the design (including some SAAB innovations) could easily yeild a 50MPG 500HP monster.I love my V70XC but this Porche designed silly 5cyl isn't worthy of holding a smallblock chevy's dirty oil.
