Alright, as the title suggest, I am looking for a new daily driver. I want something that gets decent mileage, hatchback, stick, and still fun to drive. I was initially thinking 2-door Golf TDi, but that got shot down.

You see my in-laws own an auto repair shop in Pittsburgh. Anything car related my wife goes to them and what they say is gospel. I was really liking the TDi and Greg was getting me stoked on it. Then my in-laws tlaked to their Vdub guy who said the costof maintenance on the TDi will outweigh the fuel cost savings.

I was trying to think of what I could do. I really like the TDi and the mod potential of the Vdubs in general, so if you could point me in the direction of good information about reliability and so forth, that would be great.

Here is what I am looking for.

1. Hatchback (preferably 2-door)

2. Reliable/Low maintenance

3. Good gas mileage

4. Manual

As far as Scott and I can tell that leaves me with the TDi and aa Honda Civic. I actually like the Civic and this one in particular. If you had to choose between a TDi and an Si, what would you choose and why? i would be looking at a 2002 to 2005 for either one.

Ohhh come on. This has to be in polls? While I will agree it has a poll, I am looking for more discussion than just what I have listed in the poll. I will also get more feedback and traffic in OT. Why can't there be a poll in OT? Hell the iPhone poll was in OT for weeks. Come on man. Show me some love.

Next time don't have it be a poll ;)

sorry, I still love you though :)

But then why didn't this thread get moved two weeks ago. Hell it is still on the second page of OT. And why would there be a poll option in all Thread starts if they whereonly allowed in the Polls section. I understand there is a Poll section, but I think Polls are also valid elsewhere in the forum. Come on man. Just move it back for me, or at least leave a link from OT.

Mike can you expand on this sludge issue. I don't know what you mean. You mean oil sludge?

i'm not totally verse on this but i a friend told me about this oil sludge problem with some 01-03 ish tdi's. VW knows about the problem as well. i think its been fixed in the newer ones.

Larry, please don't go Asian...If you want reliability I feel like a Honda is good, but no reason to get a spiffyone if the purposes you are looking for are the ones you initially listed. Honda manuals will last forever regardless of what you get (Accord for example) and imo most manuals are fun to drive.

Ah hell, I'm biased, I raced a 06-07 civic si 2 weeks ago and beat it marginally, was left impressed by the fight the driver put up. Good luck with the choice :)

Won't the TDI get much better gas mileage? Just a tip since you said this is to be a fun, daily driver. I think Golfs look sportier and cooler, too. I think it's a bit nicer, a bit sportier than a Honda.

Just a personal opinion, but I really don't like the looks of almost any modded hondas. Even if they can kick my car's jerk... in anything, I just haven't seen a well-modded Honda in a very long time. I just can't explain.. I don't like any modded hondas. However, they are very fuel efficient, very reliable cars, good resale value. I WOULD buy one as a daily driver that I wouldn't mod.

I just think the golf is sportier, nicer, the VW TDI engines seem to get good gas mileage... my friend's Jetta TDI got amazing fuel mileage... I believe much better than any non-hybrid Honda. Although the VW diesel engines have less power than the regular engines. It totally depends on what you're looking for (gas mileage vs. reliability vs. sportiness vs. car to mod). My vote was the Golf.

I would agree with everything you have said. But if the VW maintenance is going to cost me more than the Honda, it may not be better in the long run. The Civics get about 10mpg less than the Vdub's. but still get 30mpg.

why don't you see if you can find a nice acura

I want a hatchback. A true hatchback. Not a fastback looking hatchback. I am partial to wagons and hatchbacks.

How about a Mini Cooper S? Anybody know anything about those?
