I do a lot of color and curves adjustments but not to the whole image. I like to work on a particular area because I generally don't like the overall change to a photo. I work on a localized portion and apply different setting to different areas. Like in my car ones the settings I use for the background I don't generally like on the car and vice-versa. Masking helps a lot with that. Blend modes I also use a lot but usually not on 100%. I'll make a copy of all my layers combined and use that to blend in at whatever I think looks good. With fall colors I like to use selective color and the channel mixer to bring out certain colors or tone down others. It works great to change the overall tone of a photo too. Curves adjustments working in each channel is great to give a nice tone to the photo also. I try to be careful not to crush the black or blow out highlights. Shadow/highlight gets overused I think so I stay away from it except for very small adjustments. Toning seems to bring out the images the most though, at least to me. I haven't used it in a while though. Was going for this kind of effect from Ansel Adams although the trees aren't laid out in the same pattern and proximity so it didn't turn out nearly as well, among other reasons. I tried a few different crops one with the front tree on a rule of thirds line but did not like it so I stuck with it in the middle. I don't like going by rules, just what looks right to me. Can't and shouldn't use the rule of thirds for everything, not saying you are stating that but it's what people always recommend when they mention composition. I agree, though, it isn't very dynamic.
