My friend is getting this lens because it's unbelievably sharp.

It looks like an amazing lens. If I didn't already own the Sigma 10-20, I'd get the Tokina.

Some recent photos.. nothing too spectacular:

Part of an unused freeway offramp (3 stories up in the air) in downtown. Sigma 10-20mm @ 10mm. Plenty of distortion, but it works (might try adjusting the perspective on it).

Some photos from Japanese Tea Garden. Heavily saturated, but that's what I was going for. All shot with the Canon 50mm f/1.8.

Please! do not ignore this

i need your advice guys.i know i could search, but it's so much easier to ask somebody who knows what he's talking about. :pizza:

so i always wanted to get some semi pro camera ,and i just lost my pointandshoot Canon, so the time is right.

So back to advice : what camera do you guys think going to be suitable for a beginner better than my Canon ,and what price range is it?

I'd really appreciate any input,all opinions .

What is your budget? A used D50 and either kit lens or 50mm can be had for Under $350. The d50 should be cheaper than Nikon's newer entry level cameras while allowing you to use their full range of lenses and not restricting yourself to af-s or manual focus only. The image quality is also great since it uses a ccd sensor.

I paid 300 for my pointandshoot ,so yeah 350 is ok. So what is d50 Nikon or Canon.

And I guess my ^post might sound like " Noob looking for maad power" thread in performance section just photography wise :)

I just want you guys point me in the right direction so I'm not going to spend shitload of money on smth that I don't need.

Thanx in advance

D50 is Nikon. I prefer Nikon but it doesn't really matter what company you end up with out of the big ones. The d50 performs very well especially for its price used. I don't know enough about Canon's equivalents to give you advice for them. You could also get a d70 for cheap. Adorama sells used equipment and that way you know everything is working and it comes with a short warranty in case something isn't right. Better than buying from craigslist.

Get that and a 50mm 1.8 for $100 which is better than the kit lens in my opinion.

If some of you experienced guys could only carry three lenses what focal lengths would you choose?

Depends on what you typically shoot. For me, I'd carry the following:

24-70 2.8

84 1.4

80-200 2.8

I shoot portraits and that would cover me for almost any event or circumstance.

My friend is getting this lens because it's unbelievably sharp.

I have it and it is a great lens. It's not OMG sharp, but for an ultrawide zoom, it's pretty dang sharp. The major issue with it is its barrel distortion at 11mm, but that's to be expected w/ an ultrawide. The tokina lenses of recent are built like tanks though, exceptional build quality.

Nice shots Serge, I really dig the door latch, great contrast! For what it's worth, the new LR3 has distortion control that work pretty well. LR3 is super awesome.

Thanks Greg! I have LR3 but haven't put it through it's paces yet since I only just got it. I'll give it's distortion control a try; sure beats spending a bazillion dollars on a T-S lens.

Changed the perspective so that it's more accurate. Had to crop off the corners of course, but that's the only downside. Added a faux graduated ND effect to the top so the shot is balanced. Beyond that no changes.

PS: Excuse the compression artifacts on top.

Making me wish I had a 135DC. :(

:D Really love it so far. Today, out with the dogs, would have been the first day I'd want the zoom of the 80-200 but I didn't miss it at all. I don't know if I posted that here but I sold my 80-200 so I could get the 135mm.

I don't think I could part w/ the 80-200, I use it way to much. I've been really considering the 105DC, it's supposed to pretty money on the high key white seamless.

BTW, both shots are awesome. The creamy bokeh on the wheat is awesome, great use of the light too.

Yeah, I used mine a lot, my most used lens by far. But I felt like trying something different. The 135mm cost a bit more so I figured I could sell the 135 for the price I paid and then buy an AF-S 80-200 if I did not like the 135. I really like using primes more though and think I am going to stick with them. Besides the Tokina 11-16 I am getting soon I have a 50, 85, and 135. I really might try and save for one of the big gun primes like a 300 or 400 2.8.

The 105 is supposed to be just as good if not better from what I've read. A few people have said they think it's a tad sharper. I just thought it'd be too close to an 85 for now.
