'96 850 R Replaced Rear Door Speakers

Recommended Posts

Hi there guys

While my car was off the road, I noticed one of the original rear door speakers was damaged & some twit of a previous owner had done a dodgy repair on it with blu-tac...

I thought no probs - grab a pair of new door speakers from the local car hi-fi shop & fit them. Apart from the fact that the new JVC's were a little smaller than the originals (the bigger diameter speakers were too big for the opening), all seemed fine.

My car has the SC-815 head unit - short story is I fired up the unit & moved the fader to rear speaker bias to check out my new sound. At first, the sound was ok, but as I turned it up a little more, I noticed the sound reached a point where it instantly cut back by approx 50% in power. The fronts all sound fine, but with the fader in the middle, I can barely notice the rears now - on their own, they sound quite pathetic - tinny & no real power. The new speakers are 4 ohms as per original, but are more powerful than the originals. This is definitely not the case currently.

Has something gone awry in the head unit?

Many thanks in advance.

Arent the originals 8ohm ;)

Says 4 ohm on the back of the originals. Just in case anyone asks, I've wired them up correctly too. ;)

Originals are typically 8ohm, not 4. Do you have two pairs of rears or just one? If it's just one they are likely 4, if not they should be 8s.

One speaker doesn't have more power than another. Different speakers can handle being given different amounts of power, though.

Also, turning them up and at a certain point having them 'cut back' sounds like you're describing some kind of protection mode.

Thanks for the info. I only have the one set of rears in the doors, so that explains the 4 ohms.

With the speakers equalized, the fronts are dominating which is not good, as they're pretty tinny themselves :D I pulled the radio last night & it's even got an amp - I recall R's had these fitted standard?

The problem is I have a comparison in our '95 T-5 which has an SC-811 with a 6 stacker. That system sounds way better than the R's in every respect with the same number of speakers. What gives?

ohm out the rear speakers from the wire connections at the back of the radio to make sure there aren't any shorts. If the stock speakers were 4 ohm, and the new ones are too, and the new ones ohm out fine, than the rear channels on yer amp might be out. but double check that all of the impedences are what they should be.

audiophiles would argue against "a dominating front sound is bad." :P

Still have the originals?

Just for grins, put'em back and see whatcha get.

Might help pinpoint the problem...

Just a thought.

Thanks for the advice guys.

One of the original rears is shot due to intrusive damage (before my time), but I was considering grabbing an original from a wrecker & just putting them both back in as you have mentioned.

I was also used to 50Wx4 Pioneer sound with decent speakers in a previous vehicle - this sounds like a transistor in comparison! I don't mind the treble, but the lack of decent bass/mid range really irks me.

Another part of the CIP (continuous improvement program) to attend to.

"50X4" as in that's what the head unit said? cuz that's the peak power rating and doesn't mean crap. RMS power is the important one to look at.

#1 cause for lack of bass+midrange is cheap+small speakers. :P

sounds like you need to invest in a system!
