I think some of you guys forget what I do for a living ..... www.johnstonesupply.com so in hvac when doing a evac. it's not necessry to make sure you don't shut the pump off without isolating it from the system being evacuated, as air will be sucked backward through the vacuum pump into the system. This will defeat the entire purpose of pulling the vacuum in the first place. Just curious as my brother in law has been doing installation not sales for over 17 years and this is what he did with my home central unit when it needed servicing. When pullling a vaccum you need to turn everything off but if your just topping it off you dont have to shut it off if anything you want it running. What vaccum pump in the system Theres a compressor wich compresses the Refigerent into a liquid but no vaccum. Now you do use a vaccum pummp to pump down the system but you dont have to vaccum a system with 134a when topping off.
