I agree. Around here, you don't have to go far from the cities or interstate to find "No Service." When we go camping it is a back to nature experience, whether we like it that way or not. Generally it is advisable to turn the phone off, not to avoid the office (that will happen anyway with the "No Service" wilderness mode) but to save battery life, especially since it can die faster when hunting for a signal. This at least leaves hope that in an emergency, you can hike to the top of the nearest mountain and maybe get a text out. Even in poor coverage when a call may not be successful, SMS will often work.

Of course my ham radio license gives me other alternatives to this problem (handheld radios that can still reach repeaters, even in very remote areas or HF radio) and the SPOT products (APRS). So it is electronic but I don't constantly find myself checking VS on the handheld radio :)
