Mike I'm not sure if there's a way to use the USB-to-USB transfer cable. I might be wrong, so maybe someone else can tell ya how.

In the mean time, there's another way. Are these computers both on your home network? If so, you can 'share' the hard drive of the PC, and access it from the Mac over the network.

that introduces my next problem.

for some reason i can not get it to join my home wireless network no matter what i try.

i have to disconnect my wireless, plug in my old router and connect. Such a pain in the ass.

dafuq is a data transfer cable? you need to take the hard drive out of the computer and attach it to an adapter with a usb pigtail that will plug into your mac, it will show up like an external HDD, itunes should be able to import your shit but make sure you have enough storage, if your HDD has SATA i can send you a USB adapter but I don't have any IDE shit anymore

By far the easiest way.

it will pop up on your desktop as an external drive.

Is it a laptop or desktop..The PC.?

I have a IDE enclosure for a 2.5 laptop drive if you need to borrow it..

Which computer are you talking about? The PC or the Mac? Either way, plug the computer in to the router directly using a network cable.

Just plug it in to your router and move the folder over to what ever computer you want.

Or take the hdd out of the computer and plug it in to another, just don't boot it and it will show up as an external drive and drag and drop what you want.

Maybe you should just get yourself an external hard drive (or large thumb drive) and call it a day...

I've never heard of a data transfer cable, though it doesn't seem too far fetched (two USB devices, one for each side, that connect to each other vs connecting the computers). Though, if that were the case, i'd think something would show up in My Computer, because I imagine it'd have something to install. Maybe search the manufacturer's site or youtube for a guide on the product.

the usb on the computer seems to be acting weird. the Mac doesn't seem to be recognizing the data cable.

It's not too far fetched, but what is the communication mechanism to transfer data? You'd need drivers that could see the other device and mount it. It might be possible going Windows-to-Windows or Mac-to-Mac. But I'm really pessimistic it's going to work between an old Win98 box and a Mac.

Because he tried it and it wasn't obvious how it'd work, I'd redirect effort to the other options.

I like the external hard drive idea. Transfer all of the music onto external hard drive then transfer it from there on to the mac. The biggest benefit I see in this is that you then have all of your music safely backed up as well. Maybe I'm missing something though.

Seriously, bag the cable, I know what you're trying to do and I think you're going to bog down due to Windows 98. I'd suggest getting one of these but I'm not sure whether you've got an IDE drive or a SATA drive:

Realistically, go with Mat's suggestion, his is the approach most IT guys will take when it comes time to clone or swap over data from an old hard drive. Get us a photo of the drive and we'll tell you what kind of cable you need to acquire or one of us will loan it to you.

But really though, you can do this with the equipment you already have if you wire connect it to the router.
