If you've never seen Dogtown and Z-boys, its a great documentary about how the Socal skate scene came about. Never got big into longboarding, but I love it. But really, don't forget to calculate out how much extra you'll spend on gas, tires, depreciation, oil changes etc. Some of those may seem miniscule, but add them all up over the course of a year and a long commute can easily cost a couple grand a year extra.
