We encounter a lot of vehicle accidents where the person is DUI and is picked up by friends or passer-bys and taken away from the scene. Then we will get called to a "separate" medical emergency. They try to distant themselves from the accident and play it off as if they fell or something. When we respond to a accident where the driver is UTL, I would say about 60% of the time, we will get a call for a medical shortly after, and it will be the driver. But since we or the LEO did not actually see them in the vehicle, we can legally say they were driving it, so they get away with it. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

But I think what the police are saying is bullshit. They're pretending their searching for the person as if it is strictly for their well-being. Maybe a part of them wants this person to get medical attention, but I think it's disingenuous for them to pretend that's the only reason "They continued to search for him". They are not searching for the person for their well being, they want to try to land them in the slammer. But even if they find the registered owner, he could always say a friend was driving the car, so the cops really have nothing.
