$50 shipped on mine if you want it. Bought to work on a RN engine I was going to build and the engine turned out to be a dud.

wife is looking to either build a tower or get a laptop for AutoCad. She is a graphic design major

really would love the portability of a laptop but we both know the dedicated tower would be really nice and cheaper. Looking to keep it under 1k, honest opinions? I have a PC build in my NewEgg cart, comes out to about $850 (plus monitor) that's faster than we would ever need. Just curious as to what a good laptop for AutoCad would be

she will be doing 3D next year, want to make sure everything is ok

Stick with the PC and build it

that's what Im thinking too. Dedicated PC will always be better, but having the laptop for class would make her life 10000x easier

Does she have access to CAD in the computer lab? Stupid to have a laptop if she won't use it in class (unlikely that she would), and stupid to build a desktop if she has access to a CAD computer at school.

I used CAD all through my curriculum but I had a computer lab with all I needed and anytime I needed to design I just did that. Don't do it if her curriculum doesn't require it, otherwise you're just throwing money down the drain.

I'm in New Hampshire. There are some weird people here.

The further north you go, the more interesting it gets.

Performance-oriented laptops suck at being laptops. They're expensive, bulky, heavy, hot, bad on battery life, and difficult-to-impossible to upgrade. The most powerful cpus/gpu's are terrible with heat/cooling and battery life so often the equipment they can put in a laptop is a strong compromise. Unless portability is crucial, avoid it.

While CAD can be resource-intensive, does anyone know if some classes keep their tasks light to reduce the need for heavy equipment?
