This is what school lunches should look like. Not all the crap they are forcing down kids mouths in most schools. This is the menu from the local school. It is in a one school district. When I attended we had about 25 kids total, ranging from K-12. We had 5 kids in high school, me being the eldest. Now I think there are 15 kids or so. All of them are elementary and middle school. There are 7 teachers. Not a bad student/teacher ratio if you ask me.

That menu sounds tasty, like a more quality food. And some of those meals might be more nutrious, assuming most commercial-grade school food isn't fortified. But I'm not sure it's going to curb weight gain.

Is that menu cost-effective because your school is small enough that the economies of scale larger schools with corporate contracts have aren't worth it?

It is cost effective because most of the food is sourced locally. Almost all the veggies and fruits are grown on campus and the eggs are from chickens on campus. The breads are from a local bakery as well. The food menu alone does not curb weight gain, but the of everyone attending does.

Portion size will control weight gain.

And outdoor time.

There is no magic pill or ingredient that will curb weight gain. Kids need to eat less crap and play outside more.

Kids weren't fat when i was growing up in the 70s/80s and school lunches were just as lame then (probably even worse)

But we played outside year round and didn't spend all day playing video games and taking snap chat selfies and being too spoiled to actually have to do anything physical.

Kids walked to school too.. now parents line up in their cars for 3/4 of a mile so their fat kids don't have to walk 1/2 mile to school.

Even when I was a kid (90s-00s) kids weren't such lazy fatasses like they are now.

George Carlin's bit about playing with a stick is more and more right as time moves on and our society becomes lazier and lazier.

That menu mirrors what you see if every French elementary school. The American school system menus are a disaster due to all kinds of industrial factors and FDA involvement and I refuse to participate with our children.

The food might have been worse, but I wonder how food consumption was then outside of school versus now. I have a feeling back then, portion sizes at hoome were much smaller on average.

I'm amazed how many kids get driven to school within the same town. A few months back I pulled in to a near-by school parking lot to turn around, and they had a two-lane staging area for parents cars. Similar to the way most places do the bus. There were quite a few parents already lined up (mall cruisers of course). This wasn't a tech or agriculutral school either. "Back in my day", nearly everyone who had bus service took it, and the few who were close enough walked.

Not really related, but I can't remember ever truly missing the bus for non-medical reasons. I do remember running as fast as my legs could go to catch it at the next stop a few times I knew if I had to return home and ask for a ride, it was going to be a long one.

That was part of what I meant concerning Sysco and similar companies who supply the cafeteria food. All of it is frozen prepped by warming. Nasty.
