Went on a cliff rescue call this morning for a dog 200' down the cliff. Was my first rescue for a K9. Was quite interesting since we do not have the proper gear to do K9 rescues.

It wasn't until I got down below the dog, hanging 200' off the cliff that I started wondering if he was really as nice as the owners said he was. Luckily I had some dog biscuits to distract him while I put him in a harness I made out of webbing and cut up fire hose.

Besides a few scratches and cut pads from the sharp rocks, he was uninjured. He also tolerated haul back up the cliff side pretty well.

I am now putting an order in for some K9 rescue harnesses and muzzles.

Is that for personal use to shut your trap?

You can't blame him for being a grump if this is the crap he gets from everyone else. :monkey:

I'm actually surprised you didn't have one. Dogs are weird when they're scared and lash out. (our 3 yr old was attacked by a dog over thanksgiving) Sweetest dog but he was scared of kids.

True that - saw all kinds of stuff working in a shelter. There were always 'problem' dogs - dogs that were the sweetest thing imaginable when you got them on a walk, but would lose their shit around something inexplicable, i.e. a small dog, big dog, cage, car, men, women, etc. Just had to be patient and try to work around whatever issue they had, hoping it didn't come up and result in someone/something getting bit.

I have never done a cliff rescue involving a K9 and I do not know if our department has ever done it either, so we never have had a need for a muzzle. A ball gag works on our human patients just fine. (thats a joke for those that take everything I say seriously)

The owners said the dog was nice and had never bitten anyone, but like already stated, they can be unpredictable in certain situations, even more so when they are already stressed and scared. You add all the gear hanging from my harness and the noise of it clinking together, and my radio squawking, it could make for a very tense animal. But it was great learning experience, which I can pass on to others as well.
