I'm going to be selling my 855R soon. Tired of driving a 20 year old car every day. Buying a used 2012+ VW Jetta GLI as a replacement DD.

LOL^

Upped my offer to $2k. Man I love our GTI and GLI but I miss my t5m beater.

I've actually been peaking around the local classifieds and the GTI has piqued my interest.

I'm very mixed though... on one hand, the S is super comfy but on the other hand, it IS 18 years old. It's actually been fairly reliable too but it just gets tiring sometimes when the odd thing that cannot wait has to be replaced. From a financial standpoint for me though, it still is a heck of a lot more affordable to maintain than getting a newer car...

You'll be back. I tried but can't refine myself to a boring, everyday car. I haven't tried a VW though, that might be the answer... Why not a newer Volvo?

P80 beaters fo lyfe !

The fun part about having two P80s is that you can swap and borrow parts from each of them if you're in a pinch.

Even P2s are a huge step up from P80s. That being said, my XC90 is the perfect daily for the next few years while I ponder what my next fun car will be.

Definitely done with FWD and quite possibly Volvo, at least for the next one.

I should get a newer P2 manual and stop DDing or even sell my 99. Problem is I have about $12k into the thing and it's worth about $20.00. My bad... something I'll inevitably have to deal with anyhow.

I was actually thinking about this the other day, coming up on 10 years of membership soon

When I was in high school, I wanted an 850 Turbo

When I had the money for one last year, no clean ones were to be found so I bought the V50 instead - a lot of the P80s were bought as throwaway cars by people like me 5 years ago (case in point, I trashed my 1 owner, low mileage manual 97 NA)

As a performance platform the new cars just aren't affordable enough yet and the older ones have people like me in the mid-to-late twenties saying 'Monkey that, I need an Amazon subscription of PB Blaster for this car - if I'm going through all this hassle it will be for something worth it

I would also wager that enough of us have tried to turn these luxo barges into performance cars and run into the plethora of problems that come when you try to force a car to be something it was never designed to be - anyone who wants a fun car won't buy a Volvo and we've all tried it and still hang here to scare people away.

I'm split between Volvo and VW - the aftermarket (mods & parts), supply of decent preowned ones, and wrenching ease is up for the MK4 (1999-2004) VWs as these are just reaching the bottom of the depreciation curve much like the 850s and S70s were 5ish years ago...

Also, the dealer only subscription software and lack of manual transmissions has all but forced me to buy a VW

Maybe I just have a different outlook on it all.....if you're looking to have the fastest car in town, you're on the wrong forum.  It's about the whole experience for me, and 250-300 bhp is fast enough for the experience I expect and want out of a P80.  I figure with my 850R project, if I throw on either a 16T or match up a K24 with a fairly conservative tune and spend a few grand replacing every wear item (wheel bearings, steering rack, brakes, blah blah blah), I should be good to go for like 200k miles on little to nothing more than routine maintenance (as long as I buy some random stuff $1k winter car to keep it out of the salt and high risk driving situations....like snow).  The car cost me about $2.5k, and I figure another $3-4k for the engine and manual swap, another $2-3k to stage zero everything and maybe a little more for random upgrades here and there so, for let's say about $8-10k, I have a car that's very enjoyable to drive, extremely comfortable, cool, reliable, and reasonably fast.  Not only should I not have to worry about another vehicle purchase for 10-20 years unless I want to or something goes horribly wrong, but I'll own a car that's going up in value and will protect my investment in it far better than most 20 year old cars I would want to daily drive would.  My 850s are just a small part of a much larger plan that goes into effect the second I graduate, which allows me to maximize my savings rate and start seriously investing for things like retirement, the 105 year old 54' sailboat I want to buy and restore, a Ferrari 550, a Citroen SM, and a barn to keep all this stuff in.

The 855R is my daily. I just want something newer to DD. I am still keeping my 95 850 T5-R. I plan to hold on to that car for a long, long time. I've owned it for 8+ years now.

As far as staying away from boring, every day cars, I agree. That's why I am looking for a GLI. It's a jetta on steroids. Kind of like comparing an 850 n/a to an 850R.

I thought about a C30, but it's just not practical with a newborn. I need to be able to carry a car seat + stroller. I also want something 2011 or newer, and the newer volvos are either out of my price range or too boring.
