matt b
That was part of what I meant concerning Sysco and similar companies who supply the cafeteria food. All of it is frozen prepped by warming. Nasty. After looking at the "healthy options" in our kids' cafeteria menu, we bought small thermos containers and fix them proper meals in the morning. It's easy to make a rice or pasta based meals that includes meats and veggies. I'm obviously over generalizing but a lot of the obesity issues boil down to laziness. Ol' Dirty Noodle
What happened to sports? When I was a kid I played in 3 hockey leagues a year, football, wrestled and through out that there was different martial arts, soccer and other odd things I tried, plus surfing/swimming. Everyone played pick up hockey basketball whatever and we had video games, granted it wasn't what it is today but it wasn't all that far off

Add smartphones/iPad/games (Xbox, playstation). There is your answer. Midnight Caller
Yep. Same here happening here in Romania. We're growing up a new anti-social society. At least not social in the real world. Even I am finding it easier to write a friend on whatsapp or messenger than calling him, and it's starting to feel weird and frustrating. We're getting too virtual and this reflects in the day to day activities unfortunately. Edited April 3, 2015 by Midnight Caller
Fudge_Brownie
I grew up glued to a computer, but I still spent time outside. Camping, hiking, biking, walking around town, sledding/skiing in the winter etc. I wasn't in to team sports, but I was still outside quite a bit. Everyone I knew had a video game system and cable TV, but we'd still get outside.I do think you might have to throw the kid out the door every once in a while though, or maybe give them a reason (like buying them a bike). Boy Scouts was a great reason to be outside, we'd go weekend trips often. For those who weren't involved, it doesn't have to be completely like the hollywood stereotype. It can be more like a structured social club.
Dick Dastardly
My youngest son's school has pretty good lunches surprisingly. Not perfect but not terrible. He actually prefers milk or water and doesn't like soda, he likes a lot of real food. His mom feels the need to buy him candy for EVERY holiday (and by holiday I include such important ones as arbor day). The candy literally sits for months and he won't eat it. He started getting heavier, not fat, just bigger and at his last Drs appointment the doc suggested he try to curb the gain a little. His mom has the nerve to tell me that I need to be more aware of what he eats and she needs me to be involved in this too. So I said stop feeding him crap and give him less at meals. She eats like crap and is a terrible cook so she feels like she has to give him ice cream at 9pm before bed because that's what shes eating. When he's with me he eats decent, On wed we grilled chicken and broccoli over charcoal and had a plain salad with vinaigrette and he loved it. I drop him off and she's asking him if he had enough to eat and does he want a snack. He said no. (I think he is concerned with what his dr said too). She acts like since he's a kid he should only like corn dogs and pizza but he actually likes all kinds of good stuff and she acts surprised when he eats "grown up food" . "You never like broccoli when I make it.." "That's because you don't make it good" he says

Black Betty
My parents said we could buy our own video games (so we didn't), didn't keep soda in the house, and said if we were inside on a nice day we could do chores. One summer all the neighborhood kids built a few dirt jumps, and even a half pipe for our bmx bikes...then the county came and plowed it over after one kid broke his arm. Too much liability these days to do anything fun. And too many parent's want the government to protect their kid from everything. Here's just one example. These parents were charged with child neglect for allowing their kids to walk home from a park. How can kids be active if they must stay at home? Sure you can play in the yard but what if you live in an apartment? http://www.wjla.com/articles/2015/03/silver-spring-parents-charged-with-child-neglect-for-allowing-kids-to-walk-home-alone-112094.html When I was 10 I thought nothing of riding my bike miles away from home to visit friends.
Dick Dastardly
I am not going to even follow that link. I get so pissed when i hear of other parents calling the cops on 7,8,9 even 10 and 11 year old kids parents for playing on a playground a couple blocks away or walking home from school alone. This helicopter overbearing parenting philosophy is awful and is only going to get worse. My neighborhood is still old school, it's almost weird.. there are 7-10 year olds playing football in the street.. walking up and down the neighborhood and cutting through yards.. Then I hear about self righteous white suburban moms calling the cops and child services on a mom for allowing her 11year old to play at a playground 1 block away while she finishes a shift at a fast food joint and I get really pissed. These parents all say "it's different now then it used to be" Yeah, statistically crime is LOWER than it has been in previous years, you're just glued to news and social media reporting every jaywalking incident as crime so in you're tiny brain you equate this as it being unsafe for kids to do anything but sit in the house
