incorrect?

it is on the driver side of the engine... under the Upper Torque Mount... see the first picture.

you don't have to remove the timing cover to access them?

yes you do. he asked how you access the FRONT cams which are passenger side which isnt shown in the first pic...

(although theres are no sensors in the front)

as soon as i posted I relized he said front... but heck again I am wrong

should I only worry about these seals if I am leaking oil from them? or do I need to take the cap off to look?

Obviously lots of other stuff has to come off to get to the front seals (timing belt, cam sprockets, etc.). Same principle as the rear cam seals once you are there but a lot bigger job for all the stuff in front of them.

JBVolvo - is your picture with the "pick" in it an "after" picture? If not it looks like those cam seals have been replaced before you got there. Just curious, havent heard of anyone who's had to do that job independently of other work twice on an 850 yet....

I'd say if you don't have a visible leak, and you're not down in oil then don't worry about it.

I only spotted mine from a dampness underneath the engine/tranny connection. My engine has always been bone dry..thats why I noticed. Had my undercarriage been nasty, I probably wouldnt have noticed it as early as I did. Like someone commented earlier...theirs was MUCH worse when they removed the cover. My opinion from doing the job is that there shouldnt be ANY sign of oil if you remove the cover that the Cam Pos Sensor is in. That seal is there to keep oil in the engine.

If you remove the cover and see any sign of oil, then theres a leak....however minor it may be. It only takes 2 seconds to remove the cover to check if you feel the need.

Exactly...MUCH bigger job for the fronts.

The picture with the brass pick is indeed an AFTER shot (thats why it looks all clean, and has the new seal in place). I'd just forgotten to take a photo of it during the removal. I'll add a before shot to it now. How in the hell could you tell that it was a replacement seal in that pic though? I certainly couldnt read the print on it.

  • 2 weeks later...

I guess they don't agree...

+ 1 on the pin!!

I did this job recently. I took a bunch of pictures but lost them. It may seem daunting but the pictures prove that it is not. It is really a very simple fix for a nasty little problem. The car I did the repair on would lose over a quart of oil in just a few hundred miles.

Good job on the write up JB.

They will rest against the back side of the bore (you can see it in the pics). I struggled with this when I did mine and ended up seating them fully - I didn't want any oil to pool up behind the seal.

I take this back. I replaced both of my rear seals two weeks ago and seated them fully - checked my oil today and I'm a bit low. Oil on the back of the block - I removed the CPS and lo and behold there is fresh oil in there - the exhaust seal is still leaking. Re-read my Haynes and it says to insert the new seal "until it's outer face is flush with the housing" :monkey: Looks like I will be re-doing at least the rear seal in the next week or so...

I fully seated mine. No leaksyet. When you fully seat it, it's pretty much flush with the outside edge.

If you still have a leak, I'd check closely for a nick in the metal or something else. I can't see how you'd have a leak there with a new seal if its fully seated.

Are you due for a PCV job?

I didn't have any leaks at first either, took about 800 miles to show up. No nicks anywhere, I think that either the new (Elring) seal is bad or that it shouldn't be pushed in all the way (it is slightly recessed right now). I am re-doing this week with a seal from the dealer and making sure it is flush. Instructions in Haynes are pretty specific as to this and vadis says flush is the normal installation so that's what I am doing on the new one.

PCV is OK, was serviced just before the RMS was replaced in 2006.
