VolvoWill
So I was swapping out my optima redtop from my 242 into my 850 (this was at night so it was dark) I connected the battery backwards and the engine started to smoke from by the alternator. Now it does it all the time if I try and connect it. Did I fry the electronics or do I just need a new alternator? I was just wondering if anyone else has done this and If so what was the problem. I hope to see some input besides this kid is a stupid retard.
Ronny
Probably some insulation got melted when you hooked it up backwards. Now there's a short even when it's hooked up right. Best to get in there and have a look around for damaged wiring before you do anything else.
lookforjoe
You probably fried the alternator, at the very least - if it smokes when you try & connect the battery correctly, it now has a dead short. Hopefully you didn't kill the ECU's...
VolvoWill
Thanks guys I am going to try replacing the alternator and hopefully its as simple as that. If thats not it I guess I will just try a new wiring harness. Hopefully it goes good if it doesnt I guess I will just have to start swapping it into the 240. (which the that project is way over my head)
