Time For A New Car And Can't Decide

Hey guys,

I've been having a real hard time trying to decide on a new vehicle. My choices seem to go from one extreme to another but please try to bare with me.

SLK 55 is a brand new model it looks like a cross between an SLR and SL 55 but in miniature form and is naturally aspirated, it's an RWD 5.5L V8 with around 360 HP and 370 ft/lb, my only problem with this car is that it only comes 7 sp auto/tiptronic and I really wanted a manual.

M3 hardtop or conv

C6 Vette hardtop or conv

Imprezza Sti

Dodge Ram SRT-10

Import an Evo from US

Import an Skyline from Japan... May have problems trying to insure and register the car cause we aren't allowed to import a full vehicle from Japan, it must be imported as parts then assembled over here and registered as a hotrod.

Of all my choices the Benz is most expensive and the Sti is the least. The Vette is probably the least practicle as it is more a summer oriented vehicle and whatever I get is gonna be driven all year round. Seeing I'll drive it all year probably one of the AWD's would be most practicle. The Ram is a very nice truck, but what will I do once the novelty wears out.

If you guys could have any one of these vehicles which one would you choose, remember it's probably gonna be a 3 year lease... Beat the hell out of it for a few years and I'll just walk away in the end. Also, the car will be driven through all seasons/conditions.

For driving all year around with your conditions I would pick the STi.

I will say that a vette can be a FUN winter beater (does great donuts on icy parking lots) and you might not be too upset about ruining it, but the practicallity of that and the SLK55 and the M3 (esp the convertible M3 (unless you got an optional hardtop)) in the winter is not so great. The problem with them isn't so much RWDness as it is lack of ride height + RWDness + lots and lots of power. The others I wouldn't want to deal with importing, and the RAM... well... I'd just pick any of those cars over a truck as my "only" car.

Are you getting rid of Volvo?

Edit: I forget - another upside of the STi is that you will have more money for your next car (or something else). ;)

I would say the IMpreza STi is a good choice, it is AWD which is obviously great in winter, and it has been tested in the terrains of snowyness also(did good), and it seems lika an all around fun car, I say go with it. Especially because it is the cheapest, and seeminlgy most practical for all around use, not including towing.

I guess it just really depends on what will suite your overall needs. If you plan to drive the car all year I would suggest the evo. Handles really well and very fun to drive, plus AWD and not that expensive. The new MR has 3 different settings for snow, gravel, and tarmac so that would be cool.

For overall looks and performance I would suggest the M3. Handles very well and has sufficient power. I've heard of people driving it in the snow but I wouldnt know just how god or bad. You could also have two more buddies with you comfortably, though the interior isnt that great. Try to shop around for a good lease.

I've seen the slk 55 perform both in the french and us grand prix and I was very impressed with it. Looks so much better in person. I've driven the slk 350 in the lovemercedestour and that thing just pulls and is very nimble. Such a joy to drive plus its a vert hardtop. I could only imagine how the 55 would be. This might be the most impractical car for your situation but I wouldnt be surprised if in the last minute you would just take it.

Ouch...selling the C70 so soon? Hope you don't take too big of a hit on the resale, but that's what happens when people modify a car to that extent: They simply get tired of it much faster.

Of all your choices, I would go with the C6 Corvette. But what I would look for instead of that is a nice '04 Z06. You'll save a good bit of money and end up with a better performing, proven setup.

But that's just me personally. If you don't already have a daily driver which you don't care about, M3 no question. Much better car than any Corvette all around.

EVOs are nice, I would go with them if you simply want a practical driver's car that you'll enjoy driving. You won't enjoy riding in it though, and it could get old if you're accustomed to interior options or that sort of thing.

M3's always a nice bet, and I like Joe's Z06 idea...

My only reason for picking the STi over the Evo is that he's importing it - remember, he won't get the 342hp MR if he imports, he'll get our less powerful US version.

Are you thinking the standard STi? Or the WR1 (if you can get your hands on one)?

How much would it cost to import the Evo from the US? More than it would for the MR FQ340?

i think the srt 10 would be a heck of a blast to drive...and it has practicality to boot. it's not your average sport truck, it actually does have a well set up transmission, and suspension, in addition to the requisite incredible motor. i am definitley a fan. even the new lightnings are going to be pretty sweet, but i don't think they will even come close to the power of a viper motor in that srt10.

Hey guys,

Thanks for your inputs.

Someone asked if this would be my daily driver and if I have any other vehicles, yes, it will be my daily driver and I have no other vehicle.

Legend,

It would be the regular 300 HP STI or the US version EVO.

Joe,

I'm suprised you don't think much of the SLK 55. I do really like the Z06 but it may be hard to find a 405 Hp one available for lease. The Vette would be very impractiacal but I like them so much. About the resale, I'm losing a lot, but I do plan to return the car back to stock and sell all the aftermarket stuff seperately. If I do end up with an STI or EVO I'll keep all of the universal parts (gauges etc.) from the Volvo.

Noah,

I was thinking of Porsche, but you don't get much bang for your buck with a 911. I guess you don't get much bang on any of my choices except for the STI, EVO, and Vette.

What do you guys think of the Cadillac CTS-V?

M3 was kinda at the bottom of my list because here in Toronto everybody and their cousin drive one, they are so common.

I'm not really tired of the car, I'm just tired of all the crap that comes along with modding it. This car has been a money pit for a very long time, I would say I've spent more cash on maintenance and getting things right than on actual modifications. Plus, I know a fwd brickster will never be close to feeling anything like a "race car". If I don't sell it now at 200,000 KM I don't think I'll get anything for it in the future. Plus, it is starting to show it's age in the paint and interior. I will miss my Volvo as I have had it since new in 99 and really love the look of this car.
