The Chronicles Of Area 34, formerly 55

The S40 gearbox as it is didn't work out. The cast is missing some mounting holes for the rear gearbox/engine mount. I decided to transfer the internals of the gearbox to the original GLT gearbox housing. Engine is back in the car now.

 Johann, your rate of progress is one of the most astounding things about your builds. Kudos yet again.

Once its up and running, let me know if the SPEC 3+ rattles your gearbox to death and how do you like the feel of the clutch.

At first mine was pretty harsh (jumpy) when you let the clutch out and now it's smooth and feels like a stock clutch but with one heck of a bite

Nice project, keep up the good work..

Mine will still do this sometimes if i'm not paying attention. Like yours, it is much better than when it was new. You have the 6 puck disc like mine?

Mine is the dualmass version though... hopefully not for too much longer.

Looks great Johann, nice work as usual. :)

Using a Spec 3 with the S70 and it is pretty harsh. I was hoping the 3+ shows a little more comfort.. :(

Nah, it will smooth out once you get around 1k on it, it's a hard face clutch so it takes longer to bed the clutch in.

About two months ago I removed the tranny to fix a nasty tranny oil leak that developed (sealer didn't do it's job).

I added Royal purple 75W-90 (50%) with 75W-140 (50%) gear oil which gives an end viscosity of 110 and so far the gear noise at low speeds it's nearly zero and the box feels smoother (except for the clutch disc rattle).

Do you guys have issues with gear noises at low speeds (5-20mph)? like a whinning sound or clatter kinda hard to explain.

Wagon does, but I'm running a Eurospec R clutch.

Update,

As of yesterday around noon the car is up and running again. Unfortunately I made a stupid mistake rotating the alternator connectors 120 degree effectively killing it..

Today I acquired a new alternator at a local wreck yard and all appears to work as it should now.

The gearbox and clutch feel very smooth. The engine feels nice also but I only did 30-40 miles so far on a draining battery.

Had a nasty issue flooding the engine with gasoline at first, this because of a leaking FPR. With it's first "dry run" to build oil pressure the engine blocked.. since the battery was weak the starter couldn't crank the engine anymore. I was a bit puzzled at first but it didn't sound like a real mechanical lock when the engine stopped and weird enough I also didn't smell any gasoline but for whatever reason I pulled the FPR's vacuum hose and gasoline came pouring out. After changing the FPR and clearing the cylinders using a "power bleeder" a second try showed signs of life but engine wouldn't run. Changed the crank sensor polarity because the flywheel was changed from sensor holes type to the newer style sensor teeth type and the next try the engine started under mild protest. Some puffing and smoke and soon all went smooth.

The intercooler gave me a huge headache with the plumbing, very little room, but makes a huge difference. Before I saw IAT's near 104 degree cruising at 55mph/~65 ambient and yesterday I saw IAT's equal to ambient, even a tad lower compared to temperature indicators placed in commercials signs along the road. IAT of 65 vs indicated 73 degree ambient.

Unfortunately the SC gear noise didn't change that much. I was hoping the larger diameter Unorthodox crank pulley would speed it up just enough to eliminate the noise.
