Of course, these things didn't stop me from driving my old car for tens of thousands of miles on the street with a roll cage... However, for the reasons listed above, I can picture a situation where an (overly) strict auto inspection agency would fail a caged street car. Johann Posted June 7, 2009 Author Report Share Posted June 7, 2009 A different application for the Volvo.. Both my oldest son and my brothers son have been driving ATV's for some time now. My son in the front, nephew in the background, Recently my nephew received a new Yamaha 250 cc Raptor manual 5 speed ATV after driving an 80 cc one for 5 years. My nephew is almost 15 years old and became a bit to big for the small 80 cc. My son has been driving a 150 cc automatic for little over a year now I guess. My son is 11, 12 years old this month. Both kids were able to drive these quads at a terrain in our area but it became time they started driving these things in a more appropriate habitat.. For about a month now both kids are attending training sessions at an off-road track about 5 miles from where I live. Each Saturday between 1400 and 1700 hrs they can test their skills on the track and my brother and I do the transportation every other week except for the last two weekends because bro is in France attending the WWII memorial with his military vehicles. (Not the tank). This was the third weekend I brought the kids with their equipment to the track and the other times I forgot to take my camera but this time it was time to make a few pictures of what these kids are doing. Already at the first visit I was very impressed with the skills the younger motorcycle kids are showing. Their style and control is amazing. Frankly I was a bit worried to see my son go out there but in the last couple of weeks the progress has been amazing. Specially my nephew with his more suitable Raptor is making great progress and even was offered to drive together with the pro class next time provided the track isn't to busy. He should be able to keep up with the lesser drivers in the pro class given his lap times. My son is very eager to learn but his 150 cc quad is heavier compared to the raptor and he isn't as tall as my nephew so besides that his lesser powered quad can't keep up he has to work twice as hard. Still as a dad I'm very proud to see the commitment and also the progress he's making. Just a FYI, this isn't something the dad's are pushing but something the kids requested themselves. In an attempt to make pictures of fast moving objects I made a couple of mistakes of which one came out very nice. This is my nephew accelerating out of a corner, My son making a jump, Between the 2 wheelers, And my son at work, When by brother acquired the Raptor he wanted to trade the good old 80 cc two stroke my nephew (and his sister) has been abusing all these years but the value of the quad was so low he thought it was better to keep it and give it to my youngest son.. The little guy became 7 years old last April and I thought it was a bit to early to put him on these sometimes dangerous things. I have been practicing with my youngest son a couple of times but he never drove the quad alone. After attending the first training session at which my youngest son also has been present he started asking when he could drive his "new" quad and I thought it was about time to give it a try. Unfortunately the first day he wanted to try the rear axle broke in half.. Repair took almost a week and each day the little guy asked if the quad would be ready in time for the weekend. Eventually he was able to make the first runs alone.. and a scary dad watching.. But all went amazingly well. Little guy isn't scared to try to drive off road but he has a certain caution which I think is very good. No mindless actions and when he does something wrong he starts practicing until it goes well. Very funny to see he does these things on himself. Of course after taking the pictures of my oldest son at the track my youngest son asked if I also wanted to take some pictures of his quad action.. Next weekend the little guy will also be attending the training session with his quad. At the track there is a small infield track for smaller bikes and quads up to 90 cc.
