Received a leather steering wheel from a Dutch Volvo club member a couple of months ago and since I had this steering wheel shelved I removed the non leather steering wheel from the C30. Transferred all the internals over to the leather wheel. Next I cut the original wheel in to pieces and machined the part which goes on the steering shaft. Next I made an adapter for the steering wheel which used to be in the red 850 and mounted the machined leftover of the original steering wheel on the other side of the adapter.

Looks good if I may say so..

Visited the wreck yard. Did so not to long ago but because I was in the neighborhood I thought it couldn't hurt just to check if something new had arrived. Turned out they received a truck load of Volvo bumper stuff.

Most of them damaged but between the huge pile of bumpers I noticed a C30 bodykit spoiler with very little damage, mostly scratches.

50 Euro's later I was the happy new owner.

Damn! I wish they had piles of Volvo stuff over here!

Also ordered new wider 18"x8J rims, 18"x7.5J now, with a wider ET 42 offset, ET 50 now, giving the car a 30 mm wider track. Still takes a month delivery.

Currently using 215/45-18 tires but this will change to 225/40-18.

Ordered Yellow but TDR had problems with the Yellow paint so it will be Red instead.

Painted the spoiler semi gloss black to maintain the overall theme of the car,

Color difference isn't that bad.

At first I wanted to go all white with the car but since my wife drives an all white C30 it was easy to put the cars side by side and I prefer the somewhat more aggressive look of the black fender trim.

The only thing missing was the bodykit front spoiler IMO.

Also installed a bracket on top of the steering column in preparation of a future mod.

Productive weekend..

Overhauled part of the Standalone's wiring. Mainly the power feed to the injectors, ignition and such.

Before power came from the OEM power sources which run through the CEM and nearly non of those sources shut down at the same time. The Linkplus doesn't like like it when devices are still powered while the ECU needs to shut down. Result is that the ECU stays powered on which caused the engine to keep running for a while after removing the key from the ignition switch. Now the engine shuts down like it should.

Also added a switched power source outside the CEM for aux devices.

Finally solved the idle valve mystery.. Turned out I had an output mixed.. A leftover of the 850 install where at some point I needed to change two wires. At the time I cut the wires, blue and brown in this case, and soldered them back together the way it was needed. After taping up the loom in the C30 I totally forgot that the blue wire at the end was the brown wire... I was puzzled why I had two blue wires and no brown wire. :arob: Checking each output with a light bulb cleared the confusion.

Next a Race-Technology DASH2 digital dashboard was fitted. It is the basic dash without the optional logger. The dash has serial or CAN connection capability but for now I want to connect it using the build in analog inputs and functions.

Connected the 4 buttons which can be used for various functions. 5 different screens can be selected displaying different info like oil and water temp, lap timers or other information if a logger is used or if the Dash has been connected to a ECU over serial or CAN link. OBD information could be outputted to the dash as well if the proper adapter is installed but like I said non of those are installed.

Connected the tacho output and the speed output of the standalone to the dash so far. Tacho is operational, speed still needs an input to the standalone.

Crappy iPhone video impression of what it looks like,

Shift light isn't configured yet so it comes on a bit early. Also the brightness of the leds can be adjusted.

Thank you!

How long did yours run for after the key was out? 2-3 seconds?

My car does the exact same thing and I have always wondered why. Now I have another thing on my list of things to do.

Thank you!

Sorry for the late reply. Yes most of the time it ran for a couple of seconds. I've had one instance where I parked the car, locked the doors, walked away and the engine kept on sputtering so I walked back to the car, opened the doors, got back in, put it in first gear and let up the clutch to stop the engine..

Now for the long overdue update..

Things aren't going that well. Spend way to much time in trying to get a decent idle behavior from an engine which apparently doesn't want to idle below 1300 RPM so in the last week of fiddling with the car I gave in and settled for a 1300 RPM idle. After that I drove the car as a DD for a couple of days and it really ran nice. From a performance point of view the acceleration between 100 and 180 km/h wasn't that much less than a stock C30T5. Unfortunately two weeks ago I checked the coolant reservoir because there was some oil in the reservoir from day one and wanted to see if anything had changed and it turned out the whole reservoir was filled with oil smudge. This basically means the end for this engine...

Those who have followed the development of this car in detail must have read about the struggle to get this engine and the questionable state it was in on arrival.

Thing is that this is yet another issue in the quest to get a fairy simple setup up and running and I'm pretty fed up with it.

It's a bit to easy to put all the blame on the supplier. Probably I have done things wrong also although I can't really recall what and where and the engine itself did behave very nice despite all the setbacks. Maybe it is just a confirmation that Ford suck? :D

Anyway.. The last week there was a Volvo meeting and I wanted to take the C30 to that meeting but with the oil filling up the coolant reservoir within a couple of hundred miles it didn't seem like a plan.

I chose to take the S60 instead so I parked the C30 in the "Shed" where I left it untouched to date.

The S60 didn't receive much love in the last couple of months and still needed some adjustment on the intake cam. One day before the meeting I changed the cam setting and also modified the MAF sensor and these changed did make a difference for the positive. Driving to the meeting showed that the 2.4 engine with the disabled intake VVT now behaves the same as a stock T5 engine. The torque is where it needs to be, lost some power at the higher end which was to be expected.

After the meeting it was back to reality over-thinking what to do with the C30 . Since the oil leak indicates a head gasket failure or maybe something wrong with the head, no heat exchanger or other water to oil cooling in this engine, it means the head needs to come off anyway. Given the work needed to make this happen it means it is easier to take out the engine instead of dismantling it in the car. Taking it out also means a lot of downtime for the C30 because I know that when taking this engine apart I will run in to many more things which need overhaul or even modification. The plan was to go search for a factory new 2.3 engine and get this whole negative vibe around the current engine out of the way but this soon stranded after discovering that prices had gone up from €2K to €3K which is simply to much. Next the search for a used engine stranded in pretty much the same way.. Price of a higher mileage Mazda MZR 2.3 is €2500,- Can't source any Ford 2.3. It means, for now, the C30 project is on hold... :(
