The Chronicles Of Area 34, formerly 55

-9 sounds so much colder in centigrade until I remember that's 20 degrees warmer than it was this morning in Fahrenheit (-5 F / -21C).

Made me wonder how Swedish my S70 is as the wet and frigid cold kept the antenna from fully retracting over the last few days until the car spent a couple nights in the garage and fully thawed.

Every once in a while I take a look at the SD10 and sometimes do a tiny bit of work on the car..

So far the non running and non wired 5 cylinder engine has seen two turbo's and the third one, and I think final choice one, came in this week.

The first turbo was a 20G. Fitted OK, had the oil feed finished but decided to sell the turbo.

Ordered a GT3071 with a Cosworth turbine housing but the internal wastegate didn't play nice from a placement point of view. I have to add  that I didn't specifically order this type of turbo for the SD10, it was more out of curiosity. Decided to stay with the GT3071 but use an external wastegate. Ordere a complete turbo with wastegateless housing and a Tial F38 wastegate because it fit the ATP manifold used. Selected the spring strength but never thought about the color option.. Of course a webshop doesn't use the base silver model as default selected color but the $10 more expensive Red option..

After four months time to do some work on the ex rally project again..

cy-lift.jpg

Car needs a fuel system overhaul. What is in the car is a big mess. Ordered new fuel lines and filter. Need to find a way to attach the lines under the car again. Underside of the car took a lot of beating and is slightly out of shape. Also remove the drain pipe called exhaust,

For the 242 I have been experimenting with the electronic throttle option of the Link G4 ECU. Turned out the Volvo e-throttle pedal can't be used because it doesn't provide two 5 volt channels. Found a VAG pedal which does.  Volvo uses one 5 volt channel and one 12 volt PWM channel generated from the pedal. The G4 doesn't recognise that setup. Still needs some slight PID tuning but it is up and running.

We spent Christmas in Wolfsbug and Rotterdam. It was warmer in Europe than in the bay area during that time.

I am glad we missed the cold spell at the Autostadt. Two years ago, we couldn't keep warm watching our daughter

skating in the outdoor shows there.

We had a sweet V70 T4 Inscription rental and enjoyed time we spent driving on the awesome roads over there.

My son had a Jetta TDI wagon that was no match.(unless you count economy), but the 8 of us loved every minute.

Received some parts for the fuel system overhaul. Also bought a used pump unit from the scrap yard.

Removed the tank from the car including ~45 ltr of fuel. Once out I removed the pump unit but no pump was in there. Obvious because no wires were coming out of it. Exchanged the unit with the one from the yard and emptied the tank while testing the pump while at it.

To mount the new fuel lines I ordered the plastic "line holder cover" or whatever it is called new from Volvo because I couldn't find used parts except damaged ones. A bit of a puzzle because of the battered underside of the car. Also all the threaded mounting studs were missing. Drilled holes and sourced screws which resembled the mounting studs.

And of course a filter,

Coming along. I admire your persistence, I don't have patience to maintain work/projects on more than two cars.....

Did the car go off road/track & sustain the undercarriage damage, or did a bunch of gorillas work on the car previously??? Looks really beat up in the pics!

Used to be a rally car.  Fuel lines were running inside the car. Not a real fan of such a setup.

That's not so bad ;) = it's been that long since I worked on my X1/9 - only just pulled the cluster this week to do the electronic speedo conversion (Using Fiat Punto speedo, to get pulse signal for Volvo LH2.4 conversion)
