Wow, I have one question. Will the engine be able to handle the job the truck is built for? these engines have plenty of torque but damn.

what else is needed?

torque and correct gearing.

speaking of which, whats the situation with gearing?

I think I already answered this question earlier on but from what I know the gearing will be OK or maybe a tad high in revs for the expected cruising speed of this car/truck.

The car is reasonably light. I rolls easy with the large diameter tires. I don't know exactly what type of final drive is used. Cruising speed will be near 62 mph tops for now.

Maybe later on with the proper changes to the braking system the topspeed will be between 62 and 75 mph I guess. If the engine will rev near 3000-3500 rpm in 5th gear it will be happy cruising. I assume it won't drive that much different than a V70 T5 plus trailer from a torque point of view. In my country a maximum speed of 56 mph is allowed when driving with a trailer. If all goes as planned the Blitz should give me some legal room for higher speed at the maximum highway speed limit of 75 mph on almost all highways and 81 mph on experimental new speed limit highways because it is still registered as a car instead of truck. That is when driving with one car on top of course. By the time I can't make up my mind and both the SDM and SD7 need to be transported the max cruising speed will be down to 56 mph again. :)

From the information I can find the engine revs in 5th gear will be,

2300 rpm at 50 mph

2550 rpm at 56 mph

2800 rpm at 62 mph

3400 rpm at 75 mph

Or with the short drive axle,

2550 rpm at 50 mph

2850 rpm at 56 mph

3200rpm at 62 mph

3800 rpm at 75 mph

The long wheel base Blitz "375" had both type of axles as an option and I don't know which one is in.

"You need to go out more" ...

Last minute decision. Last Thursday I decided to go attend a Ford Focus RS meeting. Minor detail, it was in London in the UK.

Booked tickets for the Euro tunnel over the internet and left Friday morning at 9 AM. Train departure was a 14:20 but check in closed at 13:50, near 400 miles to go.

All went well up to Antwerpen, Belgium, where I ran in to huge traffic jam. Took over an hour before things got moving again. Stepped on it from there on but arrived two minutes late for the booked departure.. Downside of keeping the throttle on,

2.jpg

A nice detail, entering the gate to arrange the boarding pass my name was already in the computer screen. I guess license plate recognition. Makes things convenient.

Computer showed I was late and had rescheduled my connection one hour later.

Boarding the train is fairly easy but there isn't much room left..

15.jpg

One has to drive through the whole train,

16.jpg

A few miles longer and you drive all the way to the other side of the pond. :D

Once parked, Parking brake and first gear engaged is all there is to do, it takes 35 minutes to the other side.

You have to stay near or in the car.

1.jpg

I believe the train only goes submerged under the channel for 10 - 15 minutes, the other part is under French and UK mainland.

Entering the UK some attention is needed.. Those people are driving the wrong side of the road,

3.jpg

12.jpg

Amazing how driving the "correct" side is an automated process. Even when walking and crossing a street I realized that I was looking in the wrong directions at first.

The navigation system took me straight accross the london area which took nearly 3 hours during rush hour. Terrible traffic situation..

Near 7 PM I found a hotel just outside the center of London.

After checking in I drove to downtown London to grab a meal. This also took nearly an hour in heavy traffic.

Went to bed early. Woke up at 7:30 AM and some 30 minutes later I was on my way to a place where many of the RS people would gather before driving to the meeting area.

Since navigating through this part of London and surroundings already had proven to be a nightmare I left early but shortly after I already was struggling with the route.

The street names and numbering system, all the different area's which appear on the map as being London area but which have very different designations in real. East bound, South bound, not something we Dutch are accustomed to. Driving the wrong side of the road, Miles instead of KM's. It gets confusing real quick specially when you are alone.

In the end it took me over an hour again to get there.

A couple of RS owners had already arrived,

2.jpg

Some 30 RS's gathered at this location before driving off to the meeting place,

24.jpg

Once rolling we ran in to heavy traffic again and it was impossible to keep the group complete,

30.jpg

32.jpg

But we managed to reach the place called "The Ace Cafe". As it appears a very popular place for the UK petrol head,

37.jpg

All the cars were stuffed in to the cafe's parking lot,

35.jpg

36.jpg

39.jpg

I believe there were near 60 RS's in total. Also a couple of RS1's,

54.jpg

Nice weather, very friendly people a very nice cars to see.

I think nicest car of the day was this bomb,

59.jpg

Grey Metallic semi gloss wrap. Amazing color.

Had a great time at the meeting but all things come to an end. Went downtown London again for some sightseeing.

Visited the Applestore.. :o 4 stories high and an old building as a basis with sandblasted walls and glass stairs and some glass floors also. There was also a huge glass atrium between what appeared to be the walls of multiple buildings. really amazing styling. The Apple stuff is nice too but the store itself is an attraction on it's own.

This store is located at the Covent Garden Market which is a very nice area. With the sunny weather and all the people shopping and many artists performing on the streets it was very nice to experience London this way.

Walked in the direction of the Thames River and noticed the "London Eye" and thought what the heck..

After waiting in line for another hour I boarded the "pod" and I have to admit I was a bit nervous..

Damn that thing is high!

9.jpg

8.jpg

But with the right weather conditions the view is awesome,

7.jpg

Drove back to the hotel and went to bed early.

Today I drove back home again. On the way to the Euro tunnel I noticed the signs of the Brands Hatch race track which was situated close to the highway so I took a short detour,

10.jpg

Not much going I decided to drive on. Grabbed breakfast a couple of miles further on,

11.jpg

Arrived an hour early at the tunnel and the computer was nice enough to reschedule my connection accordingly.

Crossed France and Belgium without hickups and arrived home at 7 PM.

An awesome 800 mile trip!

Very cool travelog - thanks for sharing that! Can't tell from the pics @ ACE, are many of them customized, or stock?

Makes me glad I don't live in England - traffic over there has become ridiculous in the 30 years since I left

Many of the cars at this meeting weren't stock. Various stages of tuning. Many were lowered and had spacers added. Others had engine mods, mostly the intake and hose stuff. I guess those cars also have some sort of tuning like Bluefin or other OBD programmable tuning. Some had cast alloy intake manifolds although I didn't see them because they kept the hood closed.. :( Big exhaust could be seen. There were a couple f "400" designated cars meaning they had close to or near 400 crank HP. The grey one had over 400 HP afaik.

But time goes on.. And flies...

Coming back from the UK a friend phoned me. We had some talk about the older Volvo's in the past. Never materialized. Friend used to own a very mint black T-5R with some mods like 19T and such but couldn't combine this hobby with work and home situation anymore, child on the way and a new house and such. After he sold the T-5R we sometimes brainstormed about 140/240 and early 700 cars because in my country these cars up to '87 are free of road tax and can be insured pretty cheap fro a 70-100 Euro/year flatrate. He phoned me because he found a car in reasonable condition underneath but with very bad paint. With a second child due in one and a half month the offer came a bit to early for his liking but because we spoke about these cars before he decided to phone me and ask if I was still interested. Well... no and yes. Yes because it has had my interest for longer time already. No because I'm busy enough with those stupid cars as it is.. :D One minor detail, car was dirt cheap so next day a package arrived..

1971 142 2.0 deluxe.

From what I have been told it needs a few things fixed to make it road legal.

Except for making it drivable again I do not have any plans with it at the moment because there are plenty of other projects to work on but but sometimes things don't go as planned...

I believe it was that same evening or the next that I was browsing a Dutch e-marketplace for some part. Car needs brake overhaul, new manifold to exhaust gasket and a washer/sprayer plus hose for the front windshield.

Didn't find anything useful but I did notice an ad about a 140/240 series bolt in roll cage. Made a bid and next day I received confirmation I was the happy new owner..

Went to pick it up today. Only a 200 mile drive ..

Future plans for the 142 are suspension and wheels first. See if the outside can be polished up a little. A couple of sparco's and a not so huge but more sportive steering wheel. No engine plans at the moment although I guess 90 bhp will be very boring.

Then there's the Blitz.

Had issues with the clutch which didn't do full stroke. Took some time to make it work acceptable but now the clutch disengages at the last couple of mm of the pedal travel. I think minor changes are needed at the shifter fork.

Engine is timed, starts well. Using the C30's Zeitronix ZT2 at the moment. Still have a Innovate LC-1 available but don't trust that thing. Ordered a Zeitronix ZT3 for use in the Blitz. Only need Wideband AFR and a narrow band function for Lambda regulation so the ZT3 should be the perfect match. Hope to receive it this week so I can tidy up the wiring.

Drove 3 mtrs back and forth with the Blitz so far. Fan still needed to be installed which has been done by now. Front/grill is back on the car again.

front-on.jpg

Ordered gauges from the US which came in last week,

gaugebox.jpg

Shipload of wires came with it,,

GPS speedo, tacho, water, fuel level and boost.

While running the engine every now and then and rolling the car back and forth I have noticed that the engine has settled a bit and also noticed that the space between the 850 crank pan and the front axle became less to a point where I think I have to worry the axle won't hit the pan at deeper suspension travel. For this reason I sourced a 960 crank pan, put it on the mill last wednesday and brought it to a welder were I could pick it up last Friday again.

crankpan.jpg

Oil pickup still needs to be shortened.

Next all the dash wires need to be sorted and the gauges need to go in. Hope I will fit.

You've been busy :D

Another white Volvo! I sometimes wax nostalgic about my 142E, I did enjoy it!

If you install that rollcage, won't that mean stripping interior, and then suspension & other mods to make having the cage meaningful?
