Put the lowering springs on the car and put the engine in,

engine-in-1.jpg

The results of the springs are a bit disappointing but there isn't much in the car yet. Hope it will lower some more. Installing the engine also didn't change the front stance that much.

Made a 25 mm spacer to test fit a TDR/Kumho wheel as used on SDM,

spacer.jpg

Issue with the TDR rims is that they are flat on the mounting surface between the bolt holes while the studs are a little longer than spacer thickness so effectively the spacers are more like 27 mm instead of 25.

At least it gives a better idea of the dimensions with this car.

  • 4 weeks later...

Update,

I've been a bit occupied with other things in the last weeks but made my self a promise to at least try to work on something related to this car each day and so far I think it works although slow.

Figured out the wiring in the engine bay and reconnected the headlights and relay. Cleaned and painted the brake booster and master cylinder and put it back in place,

brake-master.jpg

Cleaned and painted some other small items like the radiator brackets and starter motor,

rad-brackets.jpg

(Still wet paint)

Acquired a second hand IPD sway bar set and installed it under the car,

ipd-stabi-f1.jpg,

Difference in the rear is remarkable..

ipd-stabi-r1.jpg

Also have a 19mm version available in case the rear turns out to be to much.

Repaired a mounting bracket used to mount the gas tank,

gastank-bracket-1.jpg

Had a broken bolt,

gastank-bracket-2.jpg

Which came out without further damage,

gastank-bracket-3.jpg

Also installed a fuel pick up from an injection version including a feed pump. Decided to swap the other parts from my son's SD-Jr car. This mainly because that car has the parts and I'm in a hurry to get the car registered.

Rearview mirrors installed,

Coming along nicely! Still looks to be quite far from roadworthy,

The car isn't very complex. To make it roadworthy is basically a few days work but most time is going in to the details..

though - is your son gonna be mad at you for borrowing parts from his car?

No he isn't mad. from day one it was obvious that this car is questionable to say the least. My son started removing parts from the car like interior, bumpers, tow hook and some other small things and I have promised to help him pulling the engine/driveline from the car. For now I'm only borrowing parts. If the body turns out to be in acceptable state it can be rebuild in the coming years and by that time I think he can have his driveline back plus some.. :)

small change of plans..

Moved the 244 to the new workshop,

Pulled the engine and gearbox from the car,

b21e-out.jpg

Cleaned the M46,

m46-clean.jpg

Bolted it to a B234F,

b234f.jpg

After removing it's balance shafts and plugging the oil feeds,

And put everything in the car,

Why remove the balance shaft? My memory of red blocks is so dim I don't recall what issues arose with the B234F.

I do recall that older (-'78) 240 tranny's used a different spline & therefore clutch than '79-, did that present any issues with the later flywheel?

What EMS will you use with this setup?

I don't know anything about these engine's but the exhaust side balance shaft is in the way if you want to use a motor mount which uses the stock support on the 240 crossmember.

I transferred the flywheel and clutch and pilot bearing from the B21E engine to the B234F. The only thing missing now is a sensor pattern on the flywheel and the M46, at least this M46, doesn't have a cutout for a crank sensor. This means something needs to be fabricated at the front.

What EMS will you use with this setup?

I wanted to use a Link G4 Atom. A very limited ECU from an I/O point of view but I made a wiring diagram and concluded it should be enough. Ordered the ECU through a Dutch supplier but a couple of days later they called that the prices of Link equipment went up and that they couldn't deliver the Atom for it's listed price anymore. New price was considerable higher and IMO that price didn't justify the "entry level" idea of this ECU anymore so I decided to order the model above the Atom, the Link G4 Storm. It has some more I/O and capabilities.

Hope to receive the ECU and some other parts by the end of this week.

Did you kids across the pond have the same issues we did with the B234F engine. Oil pump pulley bolt breaks, valves wack pistons.

When I was working for Volvo, we lost quite a few engines. Even if the motor was just idling when the bolt breaks / kiss the motor good bye.

Cheers T

I've read the stories but did not hear it from any Volvo mechanic. I believe Volvo changed to a 10.9 bolt at some point. There was also mentioning of Volvo providing an 8.8 bolt when ordering the 10.9 type. Don't know what is true. Do know that this engine has done well over 100K miles so far. I hope it will last 5-10K mile longer. ;)
