Load capacity 1780 kg. Total class weight 3500 kg. B-class driver license. Both rear axles together are rated 2460 kg. I know I know... The options are plenty. Paint it 214 with pegs is one of them. 18" in the front and 17" in the rear. A 17 x 8 ET46 Peg needs a spacer to fit and I don't like spacers on a load axle. Added to that the car is stupidly wide in the rear, 2.47 mtr on the fenders, and with a wider track it will become even more challenging. Then there's also roll resistance with the NA engine and consumption. In the end it is basically a truck. At the moment there's winter tires 225/50-16 in the front and 205/55-16 in the rear on Persus 16 x 6.5 ET43 rims. The rear axles use stock 850 calipers, rotors, handbrakes and hubs. With the air suspension setup there isn't much room behind the wheel. I've decided to go hunt for 2 Comet and 4 Meteor wheels. Put 215/45-17 in the front and 205/55016 in the rear maintaining the stock rear axle setup. My own idea is a V70XC front conversion at some point and I'm still a big fan of white. Drove back from Sweden with a speed of 75MPH, ~81MPH the highest. This was with the lift axle raised. Car did well. With the load on it I only drove around town yesterday and the highest speed reached was 56MPH at which it ran very nice but driving winter tires at 86 degree ambient doesn't work well between the ears. First the small things. Repair the load bay of the ramp plates. Already fixed/replaced the license plate lights and moved them out to fit a wider Euro plate between them. Winch didn't work yesterday but needs to be moved to fit the SDM's front spoiler anyway. AC is dead. Wipers stop in the middle of the windscreen. A D5 in this would be sweet. Ply you mean load rating? 1680 load allowed, 2460 axle load allowed maxes 1230 per axle. Load rating of the rear tires is 94 = 670 makes 1340. I think this works. Johann Posted May 28, 2012 Author Report Share Posted May 28, 2012 Lazy Sundays.. Emiel lives 100 km from my place. He saw the transporter but not with the SDM loaded on top. Did drive the combo around the block a couple of times in the last few days and made some small repairs like the wipers which were stopping halfway the windscreen. Drove it around town curious about how it would drive at higher speed. Temperatures were high the last few days and the car is still on winter tires so I was a bit hesitant to take it on a longer trip. Saturday evening Emiel asked if I was willing to go visit Emiel's parents who were staying at what we call a Camping, Campsite or Campground in US I think, about 45 km's from where I live. This because Emiel's farther was also part of the hunt for the black 850 transporter and now that I found another one he was curious what it would look like. I told Emiel I didn't really feel like it but didn't say no. Sunday was a lazy day. Woke up late. Felt tired. Temps outside went up quick so I stayed in house watching two James Bond movies from the James Bond 16 movie marathon on pay TV. Next was Monaco F1 and after that I felt a tiny bit better and needed to go outside. It was near 4 PM already. Decided to take the SD-T+M for a ride. First part on B roads with maximum speed near 90 km/h. Neared the Highway and thought what the heck and took the exit entering the highway. The highway entrance is uphill and the 170 HP NA engine didn't have much power left but it reached a speed of 80 km/h at the beginning of the entrance lane which was OK. Kept it right until I ran out of lane and entered the highway at a speed of 95 km/h which is more than acceptable IMO. At 100 km/h I set the CC and the first kilometer on the highway with a SDM loaded Sam Carrier was a fact. The combo behaved like a dream. Very stable ride and the only thing giving away that the combo was heavy was the engine being hard at work. After several km's enjoying the ride I came to a point were I could take an exit on to another highway or drive on to make a U turn a bit further up the road but because it already was halfway to the Camping Emiel's parent were staying I decided to take the exit to the other highway. After another 11 km's of joy there was an exit and the next 12 km there were a couple of roundabouts on normal B road to smaller roads after that. Had to pass through a couple of small vilages were the road became about one car width wide with two bike lanes on each side. These roads are 60 km/h max speed and with the Carrier this was fast enough.. Finally I entered a town near the Camping and send Emiel a text message asking the address of the Camping. The answer... "I wouldn't drive over if I were you because the place is packed and the Carrier won't fit" .. .. Immediately after Emiel phoned me to explain the situation but I told him I had driven this far already so I wanted to drive over anyway. If it really didn't fit I could drive home again. Soon after I drove up a road leading to the Camping and could see cars parked on the side of the road in the distance and it would be a challenge to reach the camping. There was little space left passing the parked cars but a bit further on the car were parked on each side of the road so that was were it ended. Emiel phoned again telling me it didn't fit. I did see a tourist without a shirt and a red baseball cap further up the road holding a phone in one hand and moving completely in sync with the words I heard on my phone and concluded this must be Emiel.. But I was stuck with the Carrier. There was a small sandy road on the right just in front of the double parked cars so I drove a bit further while Emiel and his parent came walking toward me and after checking the situation we concluded it should be possible to maneuver the car backward in to the sandy road. Not easy but all went well. First I parked the combo on a hardened bike track but after receiving comments from bikers while Emiel and family were checking out the combo we decided to park it on the road leaving room for cars to pass over the bike track. It was nice to see the reactions from Emiel's parents. (And Emiel) The family invited me to have drink at their camp spot and about an hour or so later it was time to go home again. Again maneuvering out of the sandy road was a bit of a challenge but with Emiel's directions all went well and soon I was driving the country roads again heading for the highway. On the highway speed was up to 100 km/h again and the last part of highway speed was up to 110 km/h just before the exit and the combo still behaved very well at that speed but the winter tires did give a bit mushy impression. Total trip was near 95 km and except for the non functioning AC it was a delight to drive.
