Manual Trans In 98 Awd's?

I've got some added info on this for anyone seriously interested if they want to compare notes. I've been working with some local guys from Volvo Cars NA and have some good insight. 1998s would be the easiest and there was a '98 AWD (lpt) manual trans on ebay a while ago for sale in Canada. My only problem with this thread is there is a lot of incorrect information and too much speculation without real technical info to back it up.

The biggest issue is going to be souring the correct parts. Anything can be made but cost goes up considerably. I'm willing to spend around 5 grand to do the swap, if I can't get it done for around that I'll build my automatic with a performance valve body and good clutches and be done with it. My concern with the 5 speed manuals is going to holding very much power, it doesn't take a lot to turn the 00 Rs up to well over 300hp so I would be concerned about the transmission holding it. My plan is for the p2 R six speed, holds more power and is more readily available.

Where do you look for the six speed trans (M66?) I haven't found any here in NYS... but maybe I looking in the wrong places..

You wont find one, atleast i really dont think you would since not many S60Rs have been wrecked. Price a new one out at the dealer, they are around $1800 and possibly cheaper if you can get a discount.

That's kinda what I figured - I'm still hoping that I'll be able to get Caliwagon's kit - I'd rather use parts from another '98 than anything older... I don't want to spend a fortune on this. Worst case, I'll back the boost to stock & sell the frickin' thing - it's only at higher levels that my tranny acts up - and look for a FWD to play with.

If you can do all the work your self i would look for a good 5spd 850/x70 that needs work then take the parts out of it and sell the rest of the parts off the car. Thats what i did and pretty much broke even on my 5spd swap.

If i were you i would just bring the car back to stock, sell it and look for another car to do this to. The only reason im even considering it with my XC is because i only payed 2 grand for my 98 XC and its just a beater car for me to mess around with. ( No i dont beat it, its just an expression)

Wrong, Erie volvo and several of the other volvo/saab only dismantlers have them.

Just an example found in about 2 minutes of searching:

http://www.vandsautodismantlers.com/new_arrivals/050384.html

OR just walk into the dealer and buy one.

I personally do not feel an M58 is going to reliably hold 300+ hp. A 2000R is very capable of 300 with an IPD tune (which you'll need anyways) and a few bolt ons. The M58 was never designed to handle this, M66 was (obviously look how many are behind them in the 04-07 R cars). And even some of those have clutch issues.

If you're going to do it do the M66 or go home, the M58 is going to be just as bad as the auto is at holding the power.

Thanks for the link, I didn't come up with any searching for M66 - I guess I should have searched for S60R -

I'm not looking to spend the kind of money you're talking about - for 5K I'd just look for another car, So used parts it is.

That car has been completely dismantled, they might be offering it from another car. But that car is LONNGG! gone.

For FWD M56h's are really solid, only once I've heard of one blowing up. I know a bunch of ppl with these producing high HP's and they do hold. Aaron is one of them, and his car w/o tune and 35psi GT powered car would rape every single one of us here.

hmm.. even the advanced search doesn't bring up any diretc links - just a bunch of threads that go on & on w/o any direct info - some with links to vptuning, but there's no obvious link to the mod - do any of you have a bookmark/link to his actual info on this -

When you say it might be interesting, what do you mean? Can you speak a bit more plainly? Are we talking all kinds of issues with ABS, other electronics, what?

I'm more than capable of doing all the work, I just don't want to waste & money on an endless goose chase.

Any concrete info/links to tangible directions, list of components, whatever, would be greatly appreciated!

Well, to end this thread for me, I've bought an '04 S60R M66 AWD Trans/flywheel/clutch and as much of the attendant cr@p as I could figure out, coming from '00 S70R . (Caliwagon's kit was previously dibbed on).

Started a new thread in Performance mods - probably should have started this one there anyway...

Many thanks to all those who provided useful info & input.

The Project 6 showroom thread has provided a wealth of info on the process - but there's still more to know!

My parts should be here in a week or so..

'00 S70R? Those were never sold in the US.

Juan I realize that specific car may no longer be available but like he found out there are plenty of these parts to go around (why? Because there are not many people with S60Rs buying used parts...) I have other sources which at this time I am not willing to share because I do not want them drying up either. lol
