All I can say is that I'm impressed. I can't wait to see the in person. You should come up to the Rein's Deli meet on the 22nd and/or the meet down on Long Island on the 15th (The food will probably be better at Rein's  )

....did you even have to think twice about that :P

Where is the Rein's Deli meet? I may be able to swing the 22nd..... It would be great to meet some fellow volvo nuts...

All I can say is

WOW!!!!!!! I may e bugging you very shortly about this.

I too will be doing my own work. I assume you had a full blown shop to work in?

Yes, I have access to a regular local auto repair shop - I do barter work on Volvo's for them in trade for the space.

You have a good deal going then. Rein's Deli is literally just off of I-84 at exit 65 in Vernon, CT. It's a bit of a hike (1 hr. 40 from us) but it's worth the drive for the food and the good people. Plus, the meet starts around noon so there's plenty of time to get there.

It'll be the ideal run to check overall consumption & performance - should be a stretch on the thruway where I can see what the top end taps out at. Just have to confirm the date is OK with the Mrs....

That sounds like a pretty good plan man. You, Will and I should meet up somewhere in CT once you two cross the border and we can "rep the highway-izzle"

I'll PM you closer to the date - maybe we can exchange #'s; I can call at a predetermined location, if you want.

Very interesting to read, glad the info I provided was of some help.

I need to to some more checking to verify this can work on a 1999/2000 as well.

I sent you a PM as I'd like to talk on the phone some to go over a few things.

Nick

Got the T5 98 ECU today (thanks for the full Bosch #, Will!): makes a world of difference- I was getting significant soot off-idle & on decel with the auto ECU - no codes set, but it just wasn't right. I had figured jumpers that kept the ECU from retarding the timing due to lack of signal from the TCU, but that clearly wasn't enough.

Seems to be all better now.

Now I can send my auto ECU back to IPD for a remap that allows for the 16T, the M66 & my 2.56:1 rear ratio :)

I'm all for meeting up at some point in CT and caravaning it. Can't wait to see your car - and we'll have 2 manual swap cars at the meet. If only my parents would stop driving mine I'd M58 it and we'd have 3 NEC manual swaps all w/ different transmissions.

Which T5 M ECU did you end up getting, the 450 or the 608? It must be running pretty smoothly now at least b/c the 98 T5 had a 16T stock so now if you get a remap on that thing it should be pretty insane for a Volvo.

I'm really curious, can you elaborate a bit on what IPD will/can do for the ECU regarding the M66 and gear ratio stuff? Is it just a custom tune?

I got the 450, I had no luck sourcing a 608. It does run much smoother than with the auto ECU - I definitely would not suggest running with the auto map. It's still a bit off, I presume due to the shift pattern/ratio difference.

IPD will be creating a map that factors the 6 speed + 3.31:1 rear - I want the T5 15psi map as a starting point, since I have the 16T - not the 12psi LPT. Ken advises against it, but I don't want to have to pay yet again if I end up doing motor work.

  • 2 years later...

Finally got around to modifying the trans case webbing on the driver's side - as stock, there is no room to use either the Volvo tool or even a prybar to pop the left axle free of the circlip. This means getting the left axle out can be a real bitch. Since I've had to replace it twice due to bad boots, and once due to snapped axle @ the track, I decided that it was about time I did something about it

Put in Volvo manual axles (thanks Will) while I was there. :) BTW - replacing CV boots is one of the most messy time wasting jobs going... :D

Basically, the webbing has to be shaved back enough for a prybar to fit between the subframe & the trans webbing, allowing access to the small space between the inner CV & the trans case.

The subframe has a "lug" that has to be cut off directly below where the pry bar needs to fit..
