I agree that the E46 is awesome, but I don't want to spend that much $$$ on a daily driver. I'm going to drive it every day and put lots of miles on it. I don't beleive in just putting a nice car in the garage. Nice cars are meant to be driven. I want something that is going to put a smile on my face every day. The S70 definitely does, but I'm guessing the M3 will even more.

Now a weekend drag racer is a different story. I'm thinking about picking up a 1G DSM (Laser RS or the like) to fullfill my drag racing needs and serve as a winter beater when the snow gets too thick.

The biggest problem I have with the S70 is lack of low end torque and unusable power at low speeds. If I peg the throttle I'm going at least 45-60 depending on which gear i'm in. In order to enjoy the cars true speed I have to be going 60-100 mph. I grew up with RWD cars and no traction control. Steering with the throttle was something that I look forward to.

Check out this power curve. Most importantly the torque curve. It is so flat that it isn't even funny. It reminds me of my SHO which was incredibly fun to drive, but was FWD. The M3 looks to have similar torque characteristics, but more power, an awesome chassis and RWD.

Joe, help me out with the 4 dr being stiffer? How does that work?

The frame is structually stiffer because of the 4-doors more stout B-pillar and the fact that there are twice as many doors, all of them with frames.

Here are two threads discussing the coupe vs. sedan at a greater lengths...

BTW, the M3's torque curve is about as good as it gets. The powerband plays a huge role in how fun the car is to drive.

Exactly. That is why SHOs are so fun to drive. They have a torque curve very similar to the M3, but have less power and are FWD. My biggest problem is all the time I put into the T5. I'd hate to waste it, but I bought the car out from under at least 2 people. I bet at least one of them would be interested.

He has 3 M3s and is 90 miles away from me.  E30, E36 and E46.  All very, very impressive.  Especially the E30 because of how nice a shape it is in for an older car.  47 K miles on a '90.

Yeah, he wants 23,500 for the E30. Bit steep if you ask me! Godd@mn E30M3 CCA members and their insane asking prices.

Actually that price on the E30 in that condition is pretty good. Finding one that isn't beat to crap is hard. Those cars are not easy at all to maintain.

My car has good low end torque, and after driving the M3 I think they are almost comparable. You do have to wind the M3 pretty good to get it to fly. However after about 30 minutes and a serious corner in the M3 my car looks a lot weaker than it did. The M3 doesn't feel as fast as my car, but it is. I had the guy selling the car run away from me on an onramp in the M3 and I could barely catch him at 100 mph from a 20 mph roll. I did catch him, but not until after 100 and he was probably letting off by then.

Braking is absolutely awesome in the M3. It will suck your eyeballs out of their sockets like everybody says. I was hoping for more in the acceleration deparment, but it is not bad. It is VERY civilized for around town driving and wails when you open it up. It just isn't stunning like I thought it would be. But then again I've been driving a mega horsepower GSX and moded T5 for the last few years. Handling is phenominal. No rattles and the ride is firm, but better than my S70 with Bilstein HDs. It really is the ultimate daily driver. Rear room in the 4 door is tight, but I fit in there at 6', 1" with just a little slouching. You can carry 4 people, but not in as much comfort as the Volvo.

Right now it is just a matter of when and what color of M3 I'm getting.

Agreed...that E30 M3 looks like it is in immaculate condition. A very rare find indeed, and a steal at that price.

Your review is spot-on, too. No one really knows how good the M3 is until they actually drive it.

As for color...I'm partial to Alpine White, Arctic Silver, Dakar Yellow, or Estoril Blue. All of those look amazing. :)
