quick s70
I've read several different posts about what the mileage should be when you change your timing belt. This is on my 94 850. The odometer quit at 160K so I pulled the mileage using the diagnostic connector and its at 211XXX. The belt was last changed at just over 147K so I'm sure its close to needing it. I know if the belt breaks the head will have to come off so thats the last thing I want. How much longer should I have on this belt? I'm just trying to go a couple months before I shell out the cash because I'm doing the water pump, belt, tensioner and idler pulleys all at the same time. WhiteT5
Time has an influence too. Check the surface of the belt for cracking, etc.. And yes, if the belt breaks, things get expensive.
r850glt
I would change the belt now, I then change the belt again or re-euse when you do the Water pump. Not worth taking chances
Keaton85
Your good for 70K or 5 years on the belt so 217K is when you need to change it, and if the water pump or the tensioner hasn't been replaced then its a good idea to do them like you said. KlausC
As soon as it gets warm, spend the $20 for new odo gears and set the correct milage. I have seen belts go 90K and others break at 60K. It depends more on the pulleys and tensioner. The tensioner should have been replaced at 140K. If you get lucky, 220K miles. If not, don't bother with the odo gear, the car will be parted out. Keaton85
not really, the hydrolic units hardly ever fail and wouldnt surprise me if they never failed in a volvos lifetime. Its the tentioner pulley you need to watch out for, they are the first to go in my experience. It's all about the pulleys and belt!

Keaton85
Your signature says Key West.Yeah, I work in Key West, how is that relevant to this? Anyway I'm stilling sticking with what ive said and YUP you guessed it I'm calling the manual out on this one. Talk to other people that have worked on these cars for a long period of time. They will state the same thing. Do what you want, personally i would be fine with replacing the WP and the tensioner at 140K but if they havnt been done by the previous owner i wouldn't even think about those two items as a risk to my engine. As for the pulleys, now thats a different topic, they SUCK, crappy bearings that will probably last right up to 70K miles.

quick s70
I had the tensioner bearing let go when the timing belt only had 23K on my S70 so I'm not taking any chances with this one. The S70 lost every bearing and the timing belt was just flopping around but never jumped the teeth luckily. It was a $70 repair and not the whole top end of the motor. I know even with 211K this car has a lot of life left in it and I intend on getting every bit out of it...... I guess I'll be ok for a couple more months though.
