Pics Of Heater Core Install

Thanks Rich!

Bottom line is, it leaks and I gotta fix it. Obviously the lake of coolant I squeezed out of the sound dampening came from the core, or perhaps the junction of the pipes and core. Should be fun, but I think I'm gonna leave the carpet out for a while to ensure there is no leak after the R&R.

Great board!!! :D

I think as a preventative maintence, just flush your coolant at least twice a year, keep it clean. I think what happens is that coolant heating up, passing through the metals in the engine, heads, heater core, it becomes acidic and starts to eat away at the metals.

This problem was notorious for the MKIII Supra Turbo, as it would eat away the head and head gasket, causing a blown head gasket.

Come to think of it, I should check my coolant, flush it out this weekend along with an oil change. B)

Is the process similar for a 2001 V70 XC? I get a little whiff of coolant from time to time when the heat first comes on.

I just changed the heater core in my 850. I also swapped out the pipe coupling kit which is the piece that attaches to the firewall. Had to as it was leaking. I thought it was the heater core but when I pulled the core it looked fine. Replaced it anyway though. I think it was the pipe coupling kit as when I was removing it, it basically fell apart and was very brittle. The nice thing about replacing it is that it is already installed with clips and o-rings so all you have to do is stick the hoses and pipes back in. I think that may be why some who replaced the heater core are still getting leaks.

this is the husband talking now. great pics and instructions have allowed me to "expose the trouble". in my case, there's significant amount of antifreeze on the floorboard because we're idiots and we've been adding antifreeze for about a month. too broke to pay the high estimate of repair.

it's leaked about two gallons in a month (i don't know why the smell wasn't stronger).

question: is it the core that's bad, or is there a o-ring somewhere that's shot?

Your instructions are great, but I'm a bit confused. I've got antifreeze on the driver's side floor only, and I don't see any drip or corrosion coming from the heater core assembly. Is there another place I should be looking for the leak? I don't want to change out the heater core if that's not my problem.

Drivers side is where it usually goes. You won't always be able to tell it's leaking like the good pics above, most that I change you can't see anything on the outside, just the smell in the car and sometimes the sweet film on the window. (I don't lick the window incase some are wondering. :) )

I'm going to have to be doing this now. I get nice clouds of steam coming out of my air vents, together with the charming smell of coolant.

There's no leaking water, so no wet carpets. I think there must be a TINY hole in the core, as i'm only getting steam out of it. Is it possible to repair these things with liquid steel sealer and the like? I really don't feel like forking out the +-$600 they want for a new core. (although it's a really good price, thanks to my friend at the Volvo dealership)

Also, being RHD, i'm presuming that there's not too much difference, other than flipping them pictures? (seems to be a comon trend... just turn it upside-down, and it fits.)

When removing this thing, do i have to worry about masses of water? IE : is it wet'n'dry vac time, or will just a cloth stem the tide?

If you have access to shop air and a tank of water you can check it for leaks. Just don't put a lot of air pressure behind it. If there is a leak it will show bubbles coming out from the hole.

Just put a plastic bag under the core housing and some rags to catch the remaining fluid. If there is a leak between the baffles it will be hard to fix it permanently. So I would go with a new core.
