bcon415
Here is a write up on the 40 series , the pictures give you an idea as to where the crank position should be. http://volvospeed.com/Repair/s40_timing_belt.htmlDavid, the timing mark you have set for the S40 is the funky shaped "L". On the right of the "L" is what appears to be a mark identical to the ones on the cams. I set the timing based on this mark, so I am probably one belt cog off on timing. MrWinkey
Use the crank gear as a reference, notice that the 80 series and the 40 series have the same style crankshaft reference points. Your TDC mark is approx. 5 degrees to the left hand "facing" side of the keyway on the crank itself. The L that you reference too I believe is about 5 degrees to the right hand "facing" side of the crank.

The L that you reference too I believe is about 5 degrees to the right hand "facing" side of the crank.Mr. Winkey, I opened the cam cover, removed harmonic balance, serpentine belt and then I used tie straps to hold the cam & belt in one location, rather than open the passenger end of the cams to apply the tool, but made sure that the cam marks were both in the correct position. Then I removed the belt and moved the crank one notch so that it points 5 degrees counterclockwise (left) of straight up and down, pointing on the afore mentioned "L".I cranked up the engine, after replacing all the above I removed, and changed nothing but the crank, moving it to the timing mark. Now I have other problems. The car is throwing: 1133, 0014 and 0300, runs like crap, no power, etc. The one that bothers me is the 0014: Cam position actuator B Bank 1 Timing Over advanced. MrWinkey
I was thinking about you this week as I was doing a t-belt on an 01 T6 so I snapped these shots. Hopefully this helps. The L mark you describe is TDC on the crank.....
