6x9 Problem ... Solved

So, the weather cooperated with me today and i took out a 6x9 to see what was going on.

On first glance it looked ok:

But it didn't take long to see that it wasn't:

Moral of the story... don't trust speakers from Sweeden!

death to rear deck speakers !

I haven't run any rear speakers or dash speakers or any factory location speaker for over a year now. Just have 3ways in kicks, sounds waaaaay better and no wierd imaging problem.

Heck, even in teh 740 I only run front speakers. Rears just mess with imaging

Ok, so i went to two stereo shops to see about getting these replaced, and the farking swedes put 8 Ohm speakers in, and all anyone sells is 4ohm!?

Now, neither of the shops new if there was a factory amp in the car or not - and i was hoping one of you fellows would know.

Now that i've got an aftermarket HU in the car, are the speakers still getting 8ohms from a factory amp, or is the new HU only putting out 4ohms!?

rear speakers are bad bad bad. At first i thought it was only a volvo thing, but i installed 2 10" subs in a 5th Avenue the other day and noticed the speakers sounded like total jerk. As soon as i unplugged the rear deck speakers, all the distortion was gone and the bass blended with the music much more convincingly. now i tell anyone with rear deck speakers to take em out, but most people are of the opinion "More speakers means better sound duuude". Right <_<

Well i'd heed that advice, but i'm not planning on putting a sub in. In fact, as soon as i fix these deck speakers then my audio is done.

Does anyone know where i can get replacments!?

850 Stereo Systems Demystified

The rear door and rear deck speakers are all 8-ohm, wired in parallel, so that the headunit or amplifier sees a 4-ohm load. If you put new 4-ohm speakers in the rear deck, make sure that you remove the rear door speakers and this will solve the problem. Or better yet, get rid of all your rear speakers and get an amp and sub/s.

Thanks! I'm gonna go drop a couple-few hundred bucks on new speakers, i really really hope this is correct - but you seem to have your finger on the pulse of 850 stereos, and that is enough for me!

WHY CAN'T ANYTHING WITH MY VOLVO BE SIMPLE!!

Ok, so when i thought i had found a simple fix to the problem with the rear deck speakers, by buying some Alpine 6x9s, i find out that the only way they will fit in the rear deck without drilling through metal fame parts is if they can fit in the stock volvo speaker holders.

So, 1) i'm going to explode 2) now i have to track down some stock 6x9s which i don't think will be a problem cause anitanium just took his out!?

Volvo rear speakers are actually 5x7, a fair amount of cutting or custom panels are required for 6x9's. I wouldn't worry too much about the ohm thing (FYI, ohms are driven by the speakers impedance, not the headunit. How speakers are wired will determine ohms) Many others have aftermarket 4ohm speakers in all 8 positions with no problems.

Well i have to put two people on my "who to dispatch" list, well maybe three.

1) the guy at the audio store who sold me the 6x9s after seeing the volvo speaker.

2) the dudes at swedespeed for putting in the model info for the 850 that the rear deck speakers are 6x9

3) me for being so ignorant and expecting things to be spoon fed and/or easy!

Anthony, my astute volvo friend, could i then hook up 4ohm 5x7s on the deck and not need to disconnect my rear door 8ohm speakers without smoke or explosions or wasted money? Also, do you happen to know if a 5x7 will be an easy fit?

There i go, looking for spoon feeding!
