Volvo Virgin
Slight smell of coolant when I first turn on the blower motor.Who votes for the all to common heater core failure....or could it be anything else?No signs of any moisture anywhere inside yet,and I just don't want to pull the dash apart to replace the wrong thing. the underlørd
ok my brah. here's what you do. take off the pass side kickpanel, pull back the carpeting, and look towards the center of the car. You'll see a lil black plasic piece, slide it back and pull it out. From there you'll get a great view of the heater core, check for obvious signs of leakage. Rob, you do know that you don't need to pull the dash to change it right? i did mine in less than an hour, it's easy. Thanks Kevin. After I double check to make sure it's leaking,I'll PM you for the skinny.I figured that's what it is,but I don't see any coolant under the carpet anywhere, and I'm not losing any coolant either. So I'm gonna lay hands on the core to be sure. :P

Guest Guest_parker2520_*
Had " The Smell" in my 2000XC but had no leak. I pulled the core and it was good. Changed the o-rings(FCP Groton, seal kit) and voila. Smell gone....
watertender3c
It seems as if the coolant level in the overflow tank would be some kind of an indication that there is a leak somewhere?
bottlecap
It seems as if the coolant level in the overflow tank would be some kind of an indication that there is a leak somewhere?most of the time the leak is too small/slow. you'd smell it and feel it on the floor a lot sooner than you'll notice the level has changed in the expansion tank. trust me. last winter at school i had a nice coolant fog (great for the lungs you know) blowing out the vents before i noticed a drop in the level. about the time it was coming out even with the heater off, i decided it was worth changing it exposed to the elements instead of continuing to wait for that rather rare warm and dry winter day.anyway it's an easy job. i didn't end up getting that wet or that cold. and let me tell you... it was cold. the car warmed up quick after that though. heh.-mike
BCo
+1 on Heater core assuming your coolant level is fine indicating it is a small leak.If you're looking under the carpet, you are halfway there. Check these links for the rest. An hour is about right. I didn't believe it, but then I did it.http://www.volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index.php?showtopic=9717http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index.php?showtopic=35445
ovlov780t
Same deal in my 95 850 Turbo. Yanked that sucker out in like 20min. Faar simpler than in a 7xx series.
soreneagle
I just replaced my heater core tonight in the drive way in less than ideal conditions and it took me less than 1.5 hours. The garbage bag trick was key. Thanks VS
