Speedtuning

Im definitely not going with IPD because i have heard that there tunes are beyond conservative, and thats just not what im looking for.

There's plenty of dis-information out there so I hope I don't contribute to it here, but as far as I've HEARD (not to be confused with the word KNOW), most IPD tunes are on the "play it safe side" but the ones in controversy were the custom/"stage III" tunes which were on the pushing edge.

I called ST today and the guy was saying they have two different tunes that i could buy. i asked about the more agressive one and he told me i was looking at around 285 - 290 hp and 305 tq. Thats the 17psi tune. Has anyone had any problems with the ST tune? i mean for $350 it sounds like a good tune but im just wondering if they are saying BS to make me buy it instead of actually saying what it could do.

and RICA hasn't had a good track record in the states lately...

Whoa whoa whoa there, what are you referring to here? If you are talking about the recent GB with John Ross, NONE of the issues were with the RICA software, they were either John or the lack of Stage 0 on the cars.

yes i know thats BHP.

Joseph,

ive been in the market for a chip just like the guy that started this thread and honestly im on the fence about what to do. ive searched high and low for RICA, Inmotion, and ST and i find everyone basing everything on opinion. I would like to know which one is better and which one would be more reliable but i have nothing to compare it to.

What is the BHP result of:

Speedtuning

RICA

Inmotion

???????

Im definitely not going with IPD because i have heard that there tunes are beyond conservative, and thats just not what im looking for.

Another thing im worried about is if im going to pay more for dialing and dyno testing an Inmotion and ST vs. the $700 i would pay to have george to a custom tune for me. What are your thoughts on this?

For BHP results, I can't remember off the top of my head but they all claim around 270-300ish. Bear in mind 30bhp with a 13% drivetrain loss is a 26whp difference, that's pretty substantial. I'd say keep in mind many of those figures were published before these cars had 100K+ miles, wear & tear can be a heartbreaker. Also temperature conditions can play a fun role... winter in Netherlands compared to summer in Florida sure as hell won't produce the same results.

If you plan on going with a custom tune, then go with George and Rica as (in my opinion) they are better equipped and George has a pretty clean track record. I have had solid results with Speedtuning, but have heard just as many if not more horror stories about Speedtuning's outcome compared to other chips. Basically you have to be an educated consumer and test the chip out, take it to the dyno, see what kind of power it puts down and have an a/f readout pulled as well.

Regarding how conservative IPD is, yes, they are pretty conservative and have sold terrific amounts of tunes with great results. Just make sure you don't get their Stage 3 tune as that seems to be claiming motors left and right. <_<

100s of people have had problems with every single tune offered in this market, that's why it's often suggested to not modify your daily driver/only source of transportation and if you do make sure at the very least you have a backup ECU just in case the one you send out gets damaged. Those figures are not BS, figure 285hp with 13% drivetrain loss is 247whp, that's doable but I wouldn't even attempt 17 PSI while still on the stock exhaust and rubber vacuum & intercooler hoses. As I've told you in previous correspondence, those #s are with a car in optimal condition. :)

Well that all pretty much confirms my standings with George.

How much PSI is the RICA tune putting out?

Pretty much all the tunes will peak 15-17 PSI when using the BCS and have fuel/timing for 18-19 PSI in case you spike a bit more.

Alright well im also looking at a MBC to go along with the ECU. any suggestions on that? or do i not need one when i have the ECU?

Why would you want to put a MBC on? I'd say drive it around for a couple months without the MBC to get a feel for it and then throw one on, it will basically just make spool up quicker and may hold a bit more boost towards redline. Dawes Device, which is now 3 bar racing makes a solid product.

Alright sounds good. Ive heard those are pretty damn easy to put on too.

The part that really blows about this whole HP thing is that im running an auto-trans. But hey, you take what you can get i guess.

I am going to need some samco hoses soon. So ill let you know when i need them. around $200 right?

Yeah, they're pretty straight forward. Here's a couple of writeups you will want to take a look at:

1- MBC Install - http://volvospeed.com/Mods/dawes_mbc.htm

2- Auto Transmission Cooler Install - http://volvospeed.com/Mods/tran_cooler_mount.htm and http://volvospeed.com/Mods/tran_cooler_plumb.htm

Yes, the Samco hoses are $176 + $10 shipping within the USA. So $186 shipped. :)

uhhhhhhhhhh.....

auto trans cooler? well i guess i missed out on that one. im hoping thats not an assload of money.

good prices on hoses tho, i was told a little bit ago that they would be $220. $189 is even better lol

I've had 2 ST stage II chips and they have worked great on stock exhaust and modded exhaust. I fully recommend them.

IMHO MBCs are not as solid as an ECU upgrade. You can probably find an ST 2 ECU here on short order for about $175 exchange or $225 straight up.

And if you get beat by that piece of crap SS, there's something wrong with your car.

He's right,

The ss makes about 205 hp and 200 ft-lb of tq. although the difference could be in weight, you still should give it a good run for the money if not woop its jerk. let us know how it goes tho.

I know for a fact a stock 850 turbo auto-trans will beat a Cooper S.

I have in my car right now the famed ST ecu that both Joseph and Ben (JHEIII875T5M and Torquesteer) had and its paired with a 16T, 3" DP, 2.5" catback, Samco's, silky vacs, MBC set at 18 psi, and a K&N panel filter along with a full stage 0 and it's plenty strong. I have yet to dyno it, but 265-270 fwhp is probably spot on. it gets alot of.... :o
