Strut Brace Problems And Project Start

got IPD strut brace for my 96 854R and had no problems with install.

car was fliped and and body was totaled, bought a 95 854 GLT with a 5-speed with thoughts of using prior suspension parts and eventually a engine swap. all was going well until i go to put strut brace on and find the abs unit is in the way.

anyone have this problem? and a way to fix it. i could easly relocate abs but was wondering if there is a specific location to move it to make job easier, like horns under battery.

Also the GLT is a n/a, does anyone see any problem with a swap to a turbo engine? My father's Mec. told him it wasnt possible or we would run into problems but was not specific. engine mounts are the same? only thing i can think of that could cause me problems would be ecu but i want a remap anyways so yea.

Dont know why the strut brace doesnt fit I have on in my R and it fits perfect.

engine mounts are the same but you will need wire harenss and everything else , since you have that with your parts car just change over EVERYTHING and you will be good :)

The brace should fit. You just need to unplug the ABS module first and put the brace on then reconnect the ABS module. This should help: http://volvospeed.com/strutbraceinstall.htm

I am no help on the engine swap but I would image you would have some issues with the computer compatibility between a 95 and 96.

On my car there is a connector mounted on the drivers side strut tower that is very much in the way of a strut brace. is this what you're talking about? I haven't seen this on too many other cars besides mine.

I dont have a 95 but IIRC Chuck (the guy that wrote that "how to") does have a 95. I didnt read anything about cutting part of the bracket off in his writeup so I figured it was just the ABS module itself that needed to be unplugged for everything to fit.

I ended up cutting the brace, it worked so thanks. Still got a few question,

viva performance offers clutch kits, now the price for a clutch on a n/a is significantly cheaper then for the turbo and the R models. Are the Transmissions not the same? in Euro the R came with m56h 5-speeds but is there a difference in the clutch? so really my question, is there a way to save 200 bucks?

can cams from a turbo be used on a n/a? still want a working engine if i use the cams on my turbo

and is there a difference in engine bays with 95 850 vs 96?

To answer the question about the 95 vs the 96 engines. 96 does not have EGR. 95 does have EGR. Other than the obvious diagnostic units, 95 has OBDi and 96 uses OBDii. Pretty sure 96 has straight flange turbos as 95 still used conical. Cant really thing of anything else.

R clutch is a sport clutch is the only reason I can think it woud cost more, unless you are looking at aftermarket clutches. At that point, you may need to look at whatever type of car the tranny came from.
