3m Backing On Rear Volvo Brake Pads

Thought I would get a better answer here as there are not that many P2 owners "in the know" over on MVS where I'm a mod.

Anyway, just got some rear Volvo pads to do my back brakes. I've done plenty of sets on our old 850 and my S70 buit this being a P2 car there is something different. There is a paper peel-off on the back of the outer pads with 3M stamped on them. If I lift off the paper, it's very sticky underneath. Where does this stick to? Do my current pads have a shim that should be attached to this or does it go directly onto the caliper? I ask because on my other Volvo's I would use shims but slather plenty of brake grease between the pads and shims and then again between the outer surface of the shims and calipers. I'll still use the grease but curious about this whole set-up. As you probably have surmised, I have yet to take our rear pads off to see if there are shims back there or not.

Your answers would be greatly appreciated before I go to doing the rear brakes on this '04 V70.

Thanks,

MIJ B)

I didnt see any shims on the wifes car when I just did hers a few weeks ago but it does help the pads stick to the calipar , kind of a neat idea

Cool, thanks! I've got an extra set of 850/x70 Teflon shims....you think I should add them (will they even fit?) or does it not matter on the P2's? Oh, and is there any real difference (gotcha's?) between doing the newer V70 and my other cars I've mentioned?

Ok thanks! Will wait for other responders.

My last set of OEM Volvo rear pads for '00XC(uses the same rear pads as P2 cars btw) also came with those 3M paper peel-off on the pads.. I left the paper on the pads. I too am a bit curious now.

No issues so far.

The adhesive should be a noise reducer, and may well replace the grease typically used. Can't offer up a certain answer, as I used Akebonos when mine came due, and they came with their own grease (which actually dried tacky rather than behaving like lubricant greases, so it may accomplish the same thing).

i use the "disc brake quiet" aerosol spray from CRC, it dries very tacky i'm "assuming" much like the 3m stuff

one thing i have noticed is that if you clean your car at least once a week including a good wheel cleaning (i use simple green 50/50 heavy soaking since the OEM pads dust quite a bit) the lubricant will wear down, with normal driving i have observed a need to re-apply around once a year
